Radio Mirchi Comes to Patna

Highly popular private FM radio station Radio Mirchi, after attaining unprecedented success in big metros like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune and dozens of other cities, arrived in Patna on Monday amidst much fanfare with famous film actor Monoj Bajpayee and Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi getting the honor of turning the switch on in the presence of several top executives and radio jockeys.

The round-the-clock radio station will be geared towards the people of Bihar and that would be reflected by its programming schedule and announcer who would not feign accents as if they are from other parts of the country, said the Chief Operating Officer of the Entertainment Network India Limited (ENIL), the parent company of the Radio Mirchi.

The event was organized at the Hotel Maurya in Patna where both Bajpayee and Modi arrived in a rickshaw. While Bajpayee turned on the station feeder, the Deputy Chief Minister adjusted the dial to 98.3FM to broadcast the very first program aired in Patna by the Radio Mirchi.

Others present on the occasion included the ENIL Chief Executive Officer Nandan Srinath, Patna station director Mandar Patwardhan, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Ramkripal Yadav and all six announcers selected to cover the wall-to-wall coverage of the radio station.

"I grew up on radio programs including Vividh Bharti, Radio Ceylon, and Radio Nepal and I am so glad that after a long hiatus, the radio is once again becoming a mainstream source of information, entertainment, and learning," Bajpayee said in his speech.

Bihar is Now a Model for the Centre

RJD ministers from the state may not agree, but Bihar is now a model for the Centre, for several `firsts' initiated by the Nitish government during its 15-month rule.

Sources in the state HRD department said that the Centre had expressed its desire to emulate the common school system(CCS) method being worked out by the Bihar government to end the divide between the rich and the poor in classrooms across the country.

It was learnt that the secretary, school education, in the union HRD ministry, Champak Chatterjee, not only appreciated the CCS model conceptualised by Nitish, but was also in favour of suggesting it to other states to follow the same. Nitish has already appointed former bureaucrat Muchkund Dubey to work out the modalities for CCS in Bihar.

Furthermore, the Centre was also willing to provide complete financial assistance to achieve the goal of revamping the education system in Bihar by Nitish.

Sec. 144 Imposed in PU Campus; Students Stage Dharna

After a daylong riot and protests at Patna University campus on Friday, the administration imposed Section 144 in the region prohibiting groups from congregating in the campus or carrying any type of weapon within the university premises.

The proclamation, however, did not prevent various students' organizations from staging sit-in at Darbhanga House and disrupting classes at B. N. College, Patna College, and Science College to drum up support for their demands that includes removal of Patna University Vice Chancellor Dr. Y. C. Simadri and Proctor Kriteshwar Prasad because of "their dictatorial behavior".

Situation Grim in Bihar

A large number of girls in Bihar are married before they turn 18, the minimum age prescribed by the law, posing a serious threat to their lives and that of their children.

In Bihar, the average age of a girl at marriage is 17.2 years, third after Rajasthan (16.6 years) and Madhya Pradesh (17 years), according to a recent report of the UNICEF.

While an alarming 80 per cent of girls get married below the age of 18 in West Champaran district, it is 73 per cent in Nawada, around 70 per cent in Kaimur and Rohtas and 66 per cent in Madhepura district.

According to a report of the Population Foundation of India, the situation was comparatively better in Siwan, Katihar, Purnia and Saran districts where the girls married off before they attained 18 years of age were 43 per cent, 47.5 per cent, 48.2 per cent and 51.3 per cent respectively.

In Patna district, hardly 40 per cent of girls below the legally permissible age get married and this could be attributed to higher percentage of literacy. At 52.7 per cent, Patna has the highest female literacy rate among districts in Bihar.

The UNICEF's latest report on the state of the world's children says parents consent to child marriage out of economic necessity, or because they believe marriage will protect girls from sexual assault and pregnancy outside marriage, extend girl's child-bearing years or ensure obedience to their husband's household.

Senior gynaecologist and professor at Magadh Medical College and Hospital Reena Singh said premature pregnancy and motherhood were inevitable consequences of child marriage.

High Court (HC) Directs Government to Hold Students' Union Elections

A Patna High Court division bench comprising Chief Justice J. N. Bhatt and Justice Shailesh Kumar Sinha, while hearing on a PIL filed by a social group on Wednesday, ordered the Bihar government to hold students union elections that have not been held for almost 20 years within a reasonable timeframe.

The government must ensure the students union elections are held within a reasonable timeframe under the guidelines earlier provided by the Supreme Court of India, the High Court said.

While accepting the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations last September, only students with a total class attendance of 60% or above would be eligible to contest in the union elections, the Supreme Court had stated.

On Tuesday, the new Vice Chancellor of Patna University, Dr. Y. C. Simadri, had also said that one of his chief priorities was to hold the Patna University students' union election at the earliest.

"Bihar has produced many leaders who started their political career at the university level but then moved on to the much wider state and national arena. Bringing back the students' union would raise political awareness among today's youths".

Bihari Products to be Promoted at Delhi Fair

Fourteen self-help groups from various districts in Bihar would participate in the two-week long Saras Mela at Delhi's Pragati Maidan where they would showcase quintessential Bihari items like sattu, pickles, different types of 'baris', papads, makhana, and handicraft in an attempt to popularize the products in other parts of the country.

The fair opens on November 14 and concludes on November 27.

Nearly all participants are self-employed small-scale industrialists who supply their products to all districts in Bihar as well as in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and the bordering towns of Nepal, Rural Development deputy secretary Sadat Hasan Mintu said in Patna on Saturday.

The government was making all arrangements for a successful display of Bihar products while also bearing the costs involved in travel and transportation of their products to Delhi.

State to become technical education hub: Minister

source:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1612078.cms
PATNA: Science and technology minister Anil Kumar said within two years Bihar will emerge as the technical education hub of the country.

Inaugurating "Disha", a two-day interactive-cum-virtual campus recruitment session organised by Bihar Brains at Patna Science College here on Saturday, the minister said students of the state, after stepping out of the portals of schools, will not think of going to Maharashtra or Karnataka for admission in technical institutions there as Bihar is going to have enough of such colleges to absorb them.

Emphasising how serious the NDA government headed by Nitish Kumar is about promoting science and technology-based education in Bihar, the minister said he had recently held a meeting with the heads of engineering colleges and polytechnics to review their equipment requirements.

After the meeting, the state government sanctioned Rs 15 crore for purchase of equipment. It also assured them that funds will not be a problem in providing quality education to the students, he added.

He said, "Biharis should be known for their brains," reminding the participants of the state's glorious past when foreign students used to queue up for admission in the educational institutions here.

The minister promised that his department would provide all necessary assistance to any private players planning to set up technical institutes in the state.

Lauding the organisers for providing the students here with an opportunity to learn the tricks of campus and walk-in interviews, he said Bihar has no dearth of talent, adding that the students here need only disha (direction).

Speaking on the occasion, police ADG Abhayanand advised the students to develop themselves into job givers rather than lining up as job seekers.

He said they should develop the potential of becoming good group members and opt for self-created jobs, as it is the only way to check the rising unemployment graph.

Emphasising the importance of technology, he said the students of Bihar have to mould themselves to remain in competition.

Later, the students were given tips on how to face interview and group discussion, which is essential for anyone aspiring for entry into the corporate world.

A Need to Come Together

by Bibhuti Bikramaditya
R&D Engineer (ASIC)
Seoul (South Korea)

December 30, 2004

Bihar is well known for the hub of technical brains, paradise for the intellect, and center for learning religious values and cultural ethics since ancient times. This must be retained and regarded by us. I do strongly feel that there should be co-ordination, co-operation and active association of intellectuals from India and abroad who concern for the development of state, come forward for establishing R&D center and business houses, share your views on different tech topics, and help the scattered young brains for building their career strong.

May our little contribution pave the path for a developed state of the Indian union.

Thanks again for this website that may become healthy discussion forum for the global family.
