It's all quiet on Munger front

MUNGER: It was polling day with a difference for residents of Munger, who are more used to violence during elections.

"When I came to vote during the February elections, I had to scale a wall to escape the wrath of a certain caste whose members threw stones and brandished lathis to prevent others from voting," remarked Birnila Devi, a voter in Khoja Bazar.

The same wasn't the case for Munger voters on Wednesday as heavily armed Central forces kept strict vigil on all polling stations here including the Khoja Bazar polling booth. "If this trend continues, Bihar will definitely be a better place to live in," remarked Kanti Sharma.

In fact, due to the visible and strong presence of Central forces, for a change on Wednesday residents of Munger came out to exercise their franchise without any sense of fear.

Dr S Akil Ahmad, who cast his vote at the local SDS High school, recalled that in earlier elections this particular booth would virtually become out of bounds for voters after 10.30 am. "It used to be manned by only one homeguard personnel and criminal elements in the payroll of rival candidates would begin to terrorise voters by noon," he said.

However, with a more secured polling day atmosphere this time, women who took the lead in casting their votes here. " The last time when we came to vote we had to be escorted by male members of our family. This time we have come in groups comprising women from our neighbourhood.

Our husbands will vote after we return home," remarked Dipika Saha. The voter turnout in Muslim-dominated areas like Khanka and Saidpur were considerably higher than in other areas.
