When Mr Rao did the vanishing act
K J Rao went missing for an hour on Wednesday, sending the establishment into a tizzy. This happened hours after news broke of a BSF jawan killing a villager at Raghopur, Rabri Devi's constituency.
Moments after, DGP Ashish Ranjan Sinha and his senior aides went into a huddle in Patna and sent alerts to Bhagalpur asking officers to mount a search for the missing poll panel watchdog. Rao, news reaching the state police headquarters said, had disappeared after touching down in Gopalpur with Bhagalpur district magistrate Vipin Kumar. The adviser had apparently taken off in his chopper for Kahalgaon from Bhagalpur with the DM. Mid flight he changed his mind and asked the pilot to alter course. They crossed the Ganga and headed for Naugachhia and made an unscheduled landing at an open space in Gopalpur. Rao earlier in the week sprang a surprise when he got on a motorbike and went on an impromptu inspection in the remote Khaira area of Jamui district. The sight of Rao's chopper landing at an unlikely destination sent curious onlookers running to have a dekko of both the flying machine and the "ghost who flies".
The pilot apparently panicked at the sight of hundreds converging on the chopper and took off. By then, the adviser had jumped off and was mingling with the people in nearby villages. With his mobile phone out of reach, the police headquarters in Patna was deeply worried. The hunt was intensified. "We were desperate to get in touch with Rao. In fact, 1 Anne Marg too tried to reach out to him with complaints of alleged brutalities by the paramilitary forces," RJD spokesman Shivanand Tiwary said. Frantic messages on the wireless too went unanswered. The chopper, meanwhile, landed safely at Chunapur air base near Purnia. But where was Rao? "Later, we got to know he had gone to check out arrangements at some remote villages in Gopalpur," a relieved police officer said. "Another helicopter was flown down to fetch him back."
