New changes in IIT-JEE

Shitanshushekhar Satyamurty ------------------------------------------------ Students not getting admission in IITs should have alternatives of equal or near equal standards THE BASIC motive behind the changes made in IIT-JEE seems to be to make IITs accessible to more students, even to those from the rural background, and to ease tension from the minds of the students. But still the grim reality remains the same that even if we make the question papers of IIT-JEE simpler, the number of candidates getting admission to the seven IITs will remain not more than 4,000. So we find it is the absence of good and reputed institutes in the country that makes the life of the students difficult when they don't get admission into IITs, as they hardly have the alternatives of that standard. The five IITs had been established in the 1950s and the early 1960s. After an interval of almost 50 years, the scenario has not remained the same. The population has crossed over one billion mark. Do we think that just seven IITs would be able to cater to the needs of the growing number of students, if we are concerned to impart quality technical education to our students? We have upgraded the 17 RECs in the country and BCE Patna to the status of NIT. They have a good infrastructure at their disposal. If the Central government pays attention to these institutes through increasing funds, bringing the best faculties to these campuses, we will have 18 more institutes in our country that might not be of the standard of the IITs, but surely would provide some good alternatives to those who could not make it to IITs. Besides, the move to restrict the number of attempts to the JEE to two and the philanthropic vision of making IITs accessible to the students from the rural background seem to be paradoxical as these are the students who, in a maximum number of cases, do not have the idea how to prepare for IITs. In other words, their awareness about IIT-JEE is quite low.
Number of attempts Hence they take time to get to know about these institutes and to prepare for the exams. So if the number of attempts has to be restricted, let it be at least three and they need not be the consecutive attempts starting from the year the students pass their 12th examination. Instead, the age limit should be fixed as in the case of Civil Services examinations. IITs are the pride of our nation. Any effort to ease the tension of the students should not lead to the deterioration of the quality of students getting admission to the IITs as the introduction of just one objective paper might lead to. Even if there is a need to make the question paper easier, the altogether elimination of the subjective question paper needs some rethinking on the part of the authorities. If we apply the same reason to other examinations such as Civil Services, CAT, the mains and the interview in CSE and the gruelling GDs and interviews to the aspirants of IIMs should be eliminated. But we must be aware how these myopic steps would lead to the deterioration of the standards the UPSC and the IIMs have persevered to set. One of the motives forwarded for the introduction of the changes was to prevent the thriving business of the private coaching industry which gives an undue advantage to those who can afford it. But as long as the quality of education at the school level is below average and the number of seats in the premier institutes not enough to cater to the number of applicants, the business of private coaching institutes for the competitive examination is bound to thrive. So the admission to one of the best institutes in the world, IITs, should be rigorous so that the students with the best of attitude as well as aptitude get selected to them. The authorities should never compromise on quality and should take decisions in the best of interests of IITs. (The writer is a III year student at NIT, Jalandhar)
