Govt needs to focus on sports infrastructure
Sports in Goa has seen a gradual decline. Once a superpower in football, the state now finds it difficult to get past states like Gujarat and Bihar.
There was a time when a club side would have been good enough to beat a state like Gujarat or Bihar. That Goa has produced international players in dozens is proof enough. The two Goans, our Arjuna awardees are a testimony to Goans dominance in football. Besides football, Goa has produced stars in hockey, volleyball and other games. The Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) was established in Goa with a purpose of giving a boost to sports activities. Can the director give the details of how many grounds the SAG has and how many of those grounds are in proper playing condition. The Campal ground, which was once a hot-bed for athletes to train is in a pitiable condition, despite the fact that the ground is at a stone throwing distance from the head-office of the directorate of sports and the SAG. A handful of athletes who train there everyday are doing so at their own risk. Knowing well that they risk injury, why do we need such sports bodies if they cannot do justice to the work entrusted to them. Crores of rupees of public money are spent on salaries of `good for nothings.' It is high time the government holds these people accountable. After all it is the public money that is being wasted.
That it took almost 14 years to inaugurate the Santa Cruz ground is proof enough that the sports bodies are killing sports in the tiny, but sports loving state of Goa. The director of the SAG had gone on a Greek holiday. Will the government explain to the public what was the purpose? Was it because there is a provision for such people to go? Has the SAG benefited in anyway? If so, how? Would it not make sense if some top Goan athletes were deputed? Has the government taken a report from the director, as to how the visit could benefit the Goan sportspersons. Has the SAG drawn any plans for the promotion of sports? Do they have any vision for Goan athletes? With all the money that is being spent in the name of sports infrastructure the SAG does not have a single ground worth its name. The Fatorda ground would be in ruin had it not been for GFA. Today, some of the village panchayats and clubs have grounds which the SAG can only dream of. The playgrounds at Calangute, Raia, Varca, Cuncolim, all maintained by clubs and panchayats can put the SAG to shame. If clubs and panchayats can build and maintain better grounds than SAG, why do we need the SAG? It is high time the government takes a serious look at the functioning of these sports bodies. If sports is to do well in our state you need people who love sports and who will sacrifice their time, money and efforts for the cause of sports. The SAG is blessed with two Arjuna awardees, Brahmanand Shannwalkar and Bruno Coutinho. It is high time these two stalwarts are entrusted with the reign of SAG in the interest of the sports. Accountability is a must if we are to succeed. http://www.navhindtimes.com/stories.php?part=news&Story_ID=081820
