An increasing numbers of madarsas or Islamic religious schools in Bihar are compelled to close down because of inadequate finance to make their ends meet. The teaching faculty are disappointed with the State Government's indifference towards their plight.
The teachers for Islamic studies have already gone on strike for not being paid their salary called "grant" for the past two-and-a-half months by the State Government.
More than 2,986 non-aided madrasas in the State are on the verge of closure. There are over 4,500 madarsas in Bihar of which 1,110 are State sponsored. The remaining 2,500 madarsas are affiliated to the Bihar State Madarsas Education Board.
Zahidur Rahman, the President of the State's Madarsa Morcha (organisation) says they are in dire straits.Rahman says teachers at the Madarsas are entitled to benefits equivalent to that of any other Government teacher.
