Gallantry Medal for 7 police personnel

PATNA: DSP (town) of Patna Rakesh Kumar Dubey is among the seven police personnel who have been awarded the Gallantry Medal by the Bihar government.

Other recipients of the Gallantry Medal, the highest honour of its kind conferred by the state government, are: STF DSP Sanjay Singh, inspector of Patna's Kotwali police station Ajay Kumar Singh, STF sub-inspectors Irshad Alam and Shashi Ranjan, and STF junior commandos Dhanraj Kumar and Pashupati Bharati.

Each of the recipients will be given the medal, citation and a cash reward of Rs 51,000 by governor Buta Singh at the Independence Day function in Gandhi Maidan here on Monday.

The state government had instituted the award last year for its police forces.

Incidentally, Rakesh Kumar Dubey's father S N Dubey, who was also in the state police service, had been awarded the Police Medal for Gallantry and President's Police Medal for Meritorious Services.

Rakesh got the Gallantry Medal for his excellent performance, including the arrest of 11 hardcore Maoists among whom two were wanted by Interpol in connection with the murder of two American embassy staff members in Kathmandu, nabbing of Shankar Singh, self-styled leader of the banned outfit North Bihar Liberation Army, along with his associates following an encounter in the Bhattacharya Road area here and killing of two notorious criminals in another fierce encounter.

Sanjay Singh got the medal for arresting 10 activists of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), including three women, following a raid at Jakkanpur here. Under Singh's leadership, the STF recovered 7,000 rounds of ammunition, 600 detonators and other things. Later, it was found that the arrested persons had been involved in the attack on a police post at Simrahan in Bettiah. Following an encounter, he nabbed five of the extremists who had looted police carbines and rifles from a picket in Naubatpur. The looted police weapons along with grenades were recovered from the extremists.
