32 Maoists surrender in Bihar:

At least 32 rebels of the banned Maoist Communist Centre have surrendered before the police in Bihar over the last 24 hours.

Police said they had also recovered arms and ammunition from the surrendered rebels, along with some literature promoting their ideologies.

Maoists, called Naxalites in common parlance, are left-wing extremists who believe in violent struggle for the establishment of peasant rule.

""We will keep in custody those who are wanted and have cases against. And a normal procedure would go for the rest who have surrendered," Amit Lodha, Superintendent of Police, Muzaffarpur.

Dipen Das, an area commander of the MCC said they were convinced by the police to lay down their arms.

"The police motivated us and convinced us of getting what we desire. We will get respect in the society. So we decided to give up this path of violence and to return to the mainstream," said Das.

The Naxalites operate in several states across India and have pitted their campaign against landlords and the state administration, who they accuse of exploiting the poor.

The movement, which started in the early 1960s at a village called Naxalbari in the eastern state of West Bengal is prominent in the eastern states of West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and in Andhra Pradesh, south India.

The movement owes its origin to the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), which was formed in India in the 1960s.

The party wants radical redistribution of land, an issue that is bitterly opposed by the upper caste landlords. (ANI)
