1. Proposal for education system

Opening a study centre will definitely work but the impact will not be that much. Producing few qualified workforce is not the solution, converting the mass into efficient human resource will change the scenario.

The school seems to be the best option. We can open an institute in Bihar which should excel in its quality. The all possible facility should be provided to them. We should make that the brand name and then expand it into chain of institution.

My concept of such school is that, parents who are rich enough to pay the fees, have to pay for it. But the relatively economically weaker section (farmers, small shop owners etc.) should be given free education. Friends' future of a state lies on the shoulder of the children. So better we strengthen it. We should make them realize the duties towards the society. They should be encouraged to teach the poor children. This will make them responsible and it will also groom their personality. Along with focusing on the quick steps we should start
nurturing horses of long run. As I think we should plan, keeping future prospects of the trust. The parents should be also encouraged to participate in this movement. Truly speaking, I am totally against the present methodology of teaching especially in Bihar. The present education system compels student to opt for either engineering or medical or clerk level jobs. Does anybody tell them about prospective career in fine arts, sports, art subjects? Do they know that they can run their own small scale industries? No not at all. And if some of them know then also there is nobody out there to guide them.According to me I have divided my education concept into different phases.

Phase 1:Open a school.

Provide them all the facilities which an ideal school should have. Well equipped Labs, library with large volume of books, internet facility. They should be encouraged to have some good hobbies such as fine arts, plantation, social welfare activities, writing diarie s, graffiti, and drama.

Student from higher classes should be appreciated to engage classes for poor children. Their one hour a week can change the life of those kids. This will lead to two benefits; first the moral status of the students will be high that they are supporting the society, second we can save some of money on faculty which can be used for other purpose. Each student should be encouraged to save some of their pocket money and donate towards the education of poor. Even parents should be involved. The old books, spare rough books should be given to poor instead of selling them in scrap market. Involve students in all the small projects undergoing in the school such as setting solar panel for street lamp, plantation. There should be a definite evaluation system to judge and appreciate the capabilities of the students. For every event(academic and non academic) 5 bonus point should be given to topper, 4 to first runner-up, 3 to second runner-up and 2 point to each participant. If they misbehave or do anything wrong then five points will be reduced. And after each year the student from each class will get scholarship. Since point is given even to participants thus each one will try to increase their tally by at least participating. This will groom their personality in various dimensions. Organize seven day school fest Many technical, non technical and art events should be organized through this.
Poem writing(English, Hindi)
Drama(Hindi, English)
Mimicry
Mad ads

Essay writing
Science project and seminars
Song and dance(solo, group and band)
Playing instrument
Innovative and creative work and various others.

Invite different specialized people as judges for the event. In the Time gap between two events tell people about their rights and duties. Tell them how they can improve the present situation of the society, how to lend a helping hand to the poor for social uplifting.

Phase 2: Open a college, three of four years after the opening of school. Divide the students in four categories according to their preferences and skills after first year. One who wants to be engineer and doctor and shows that much potential during the test conducted by the institute. Intensive coaching should be given to them. Various Bihari students from IIT should be encouraged to teach them depending upon their area of interest. Various professors should be invited for guest lecture. Test paper should be prepared for them to make them next to perfect for taking the exam. One who wants to go for other professio n such as banking, railways, and various others field. They should be trained in that fashion. Test paper should be prepared for them to make them next to perfect for taking the exam. One who wants to open a small scale industries or agro based industry. Ex. oil industries, sugar factory, horticulture, making and packaging pills for medical companies, bee keeping, food processing unit, dairy farm. Persons from those industries should be invited to familiarize them from various aspects of the industries. One who wants to go for further study for MBA or research studies. The rest of the things are applicable same as the school. I mean to say extra curricular activities.

Phase 3:Open an engineering college, 3-4 years after the college. We can initially introduce computer science and electronics allied branches as it won't take that much money as mechanical. Other branches may be introduced later as per industry demand.
At that time around 7-8 yrs from now we will have many persons at higher post in different private firms. So we can lobby for campus interviews in our college, obviously students have that much potential but it's the opportunity that they don't get. And my opinion is that only one campus can change the scenario. And then we can get full support from the industries. We can collaborate with different industries to introduce subject and courses as per their need.

Phase 4:If we do all this in appropriate way then we will in position to establish medical and Management College.

Phase 5:Don't you think guys its time to convert our institution into
"DEEMED UNIVERSITY"?

-----------------------------0---------------------------0----------------------------
There is one another way to educate as well as financially empower the people. This proposal was in my mind but I was not that much sure about it, as in earlier plan some people may come forward to invest. This could fetch them good profit along with fulfilling the social responsibility. My second proposal is that we can adopt a remote village. We choose some local people to implement our plans. In the beginning we invest some money for some projects. Once other villagers see the result they will be open for our ideas. Once they are ready then we can give only technical support and they can carry out their project themselves. We can open a school with the help of some educated people, and then advance to
high school. It may take 1-2 yrs to reach this state. One thing that is generally seems to be common in human being is that they try to follow the success stories. Once we improve their life style the neighbored villages will try to repeat those things. Our job is done. Just give them technical support from outside. We again choose another village in some other remote village and do the same. Obviously this is not profitable business to attract people for involvement. We can't get many people for this plan. Thus it has to be done through this group. We don't need a lot of money to implement this plan.

Samir Kumar Mishra <samirmishra@gmail.com>
The idea of having a library is very good. To start with we can contribute with the books what we have in our shelves and are not reading them or finished reading them. The topics could range from Computer, Science, History, Arts etc. Long back a similar initiative was made by Mr. Rama Shankar Pandey (of Mico) in Patna behind Museum. I'm not sure the current state of the library as the last time I'd been there was more than 2 yrs ago. But we can still check that out. We as a member of BihariBrain can also participate in the activities of the school while we are there. This will give us chance to see the progress of the whole thing. A sense of belonging will be created in the group as well. These are just few of my thoughts for this project.

2. Proposal on electrification of Bihar

Jharkhand Villages / urban areas with the help of solar energy. Why this project? As per 2001 Census, only 43.5 % of the rural households have availability of electricity in whole India. For Bihar and Jharkhand. The situation is worse where almost 85 % of Villages are un-electrified or there is no transformers /powers cable available. So, let's get together and give ray of light to our fellow Biharis and Jharkhand is.

Objective: The objective is aimed at providing a viable, suitable and an alternative use of solar energy for electrification of villages in Bihar / Jharkhand. The classification of user can range from household, agricultural industries such as irrigation pumps, etc., service industries such as schools, dispensaries / hospitals, hotels, shopkeepers and hawkers.

Harnessing solar power: As India is located in tropical zone, solar energy is abundantly available most of a years. Basically the energy from SUN can be used in 2
forms. Solar thermal energy Under this, equipments are used to convert sun energy into solar power. Commonly known applications are solar hot water heat systems, solar air heating systems, solar drying systems, solar desalination systems and solar cooking systems etc.

Solar photo voltaic Under this, equipments are used to convert sun energy in to electrical energy by using solar photovoltaic modules. The application of this can range from powering one light to the whole village or city. For the said project, in phase-1, we will concentrate on using solar photo voltaic application of solar power. In this, we will be using solar energy in three viable applications.

Solar lantern: It is a portable emergency light powered by sun energy. There is a solar panel of 10W, which has to be kept in the sun and through the cable plugged into the lantern. When the SUN is falling on the solar module, current is produced and it then charges the battery in the solar lantern. For a daily sun light charge, the light
can be used for 4 hours everyday. The lantern consists of 7W component fluorescent light, giving a brightness of 350 lumens. When the light burns, it is possible to read
and write in a room size of 100Sq.Ft. The life of the solar panel is about 20-25 years and the battery is 3 years and the bulb is for 5 years. It is an easily affordable product for the home and absolutely maintenance free. Solar home / small premises lighting system: You can have 2- light fitting and a small table fan powered by solar energy. The 35W solar panel, can power this system, for every day sun light charge for 2 hours. This product is very useful as emergency light for the house and each light consist of 11 W CFL lamp. This will offer brightness equivalent to 650 lumens. Again. there is no maintenance in this product. Solar power emergency systems: The solar power emergency system is basically for the urban /village areas where there is frequent disruption of state electricity. You can have solar power system to provide emergency lighting or fan load in a house or shop or office or common area for apartments. They are much reliable and cheaper to have than conventional portable generators. All the above products can be easily retrofitted in any roof top - either on asbestos roof / RCC roofing. Vendors of Solar Power products:
There are lots of suppliers and vendors In India for the solar panels and other solar system. I have contacted few of them and have technically as well as commercially
analysed their products. Selection of vendors shall be done based best and cheap products and have a recommendable reference list of their products in India.

Estimated Budget:
For solar lanterns:
The estimated budget / cost for providing electricity by one solar lantern each to at least houses / shops in a village will be about Rs. 70,000 including transportation and
installation of the system.

For solar home / small premises lighting system:
The estimated budget / cost for providing electricity to one small premises (Considering two nos. of rooms) plus one dispensary (considering one room) in 1 (one) village will be about Rs. 80,000 including transportation and installation of the system.

Supports available: Different supports are available from the Ministry of Non- Conventional Energy Sources and Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency
for the use of solar energy products. These supports ranges form Micro- Finance to subsidized price of different solar products.

nandan kumar <nandanrecj@hotmail.com<br> 3. Scholarship and other schemes I would like to introduce scholarship scheme for students studying in Engineering/Medical colleges in Bihar. As per this proposal, Rs500 (or other amount to be decided in our meeting) per month would be given to selected students for their
maintenance cost through our group. The idea is to put into practice any good scheme for students on floor level to gain confidence of our people before asking for their
donations/contributions.

We will cover all eng/medical colleges for our scheme and advertisement will be done by sending notices/fly posters etc. The selection will be done by our committee and it will be based on merit cum means basis with more stress on financial background. The scholarship would be distributed in 12 cheques which would be cashed on 1st of
each month. I am sure; the confidence gained by students' community will help our group to expand with right work force. Now, coming to the important point,
donations.........we cannot ask for donations from other organization without showing our work. As a student, I am ready to sponsor 3 students, which will cost
Rs18, 000/00 for 1 year, but would like to start the scheme with at least 10 candidates (5 Engg and 5 Medical).I was going through the member list. We have (roughly)
Singapore - 16 members; USA - 15 members; UAE -10 members; Sth Korea- 2 members; Europe -5 members; UK -2 members. If each member can donate 10 units of their currency (10£/10$ per month or even 5£
5$ per month), m sure we can sponsor more than 20 students from different colleges per year. Once we implement this scheme, I am giving assurance that will bring donations for more than 50 students for next year.We have more than 100 members in
India, and I don't think it's impossible for them to donate, 10 Rs per month.........as that will give some sense of responsibilities for everyone......Now, regarding carrying out this work, I am ready to give my full support for this proposal right from the configuration of application form to advertisement...Waiting for everyone's response.. than we will proceed for the next stage. Thanks

4. Proposal for students
More ideas:· All Bihar project competition: Best three live project exhibitions will get award from Bihar brains and scholarships. In Bihar, jharkhand,up,mp west Bengal etc-- ,there is no live student project contest where student can show projects in front of industries bigwig. This is important for the student for their future career. In these states, students are theoretically brilliant but can't implement because of lack of industries, sponsorship and guide also. We should start this scheme also. Even we can declare this scheme now also
because projects session for the company started.· Bihar brains may sponsor some good project implemented by engineering college student and professors team. Student may get some remuneration after completion of the project/during project. Selection of the student will be on the basis of exams and interview on that particular topic. I already written
letter to BKS about one-two project ideas to NIT and other engineering colleges to implement, If it success then good whole country and Bihar brains (as we market it in the bigger way).
·Bihar brains may give training to the student under "tekbrains" by taking some nominal fees at Bangalore in software testing/VLSI/EMBEDDED SYSTEM/ etc. We can start summer training to the students-- by taking some nominal fee at Bangalore. There are many ideas to implement. We have to discuss on this to start. I may talk to you on this issue--

5. Learning Centre
We should rather identify some self-motivated and inspired individuls in some selected villages to begin with and motivate them to open small learning centres which do not require large sum of money and here we all are ready to contribute in every way. I think if we really want to develop Bihar , we have to make our base strong which are of course our children specially poor children. We can motivate ppl to open small school where 3-4 hours routine can be followed. I hope we all can affford some money to start such type of small learning centres. Once success is achieved we can start in other village also. And i believe ppl from Bihar are more sensitive and we dont have to ask for donation. They will come forward and then nobody can stop us.Remember unless you create a healthy base of literate and educated children in our village , all other educational models have no meaning. The
model proposed is just not imaginary as i am praticing the same myself where i devote 3 hours everyday , six days a week for children of domestic help and daily
labourers. With warm regards, Mala

mala sinha mala_dgp4@yahoo.com
6. Rainwater Harvesting
Rainwater Harvesting is a technology used for collecting and storing rainwater from the rooftops , the surface or rock catchmakers using simple techniques such as jars and pots as well as more complex methods such as underground check dams. Please note that the techniques found in Asia an Africa arise from practices employed by ancient civilization within these regions and can still serve as a major source of drinkning water supply in rural areas. We can divide the system as of these principal components, namely the catchment areas , the collection of device and the conveyance system. I would like the members to think about this method
of Rainwater Harvesting for our rural Bihar as a solution of water problem. I think this can be implemented with least of troubles and investment in various villages in Bihar. I would wait for the response of fellow members so that we may discuss this issue in more details. If considered positive , this may be placed as an agenda for the next meeting of Biharbrains.
Warm Regards.Mala

Bibhuti bikramaditya <bikramadityabibhuti@yahoo.com>
Dear Mala,
please send your detailed proposal on rain harvesting and give stress on following
points----

  1. selection of vilage for test case.
  2. strategies for mobilising and convincing people for the same.
  3. any support needed from govt. agencies?
  4. Man days required in the said project for the samll village
  5. technolgy and resources required
  6. go for financial aspect: how much money have to be invested? Can
we gain also? As we are in nascent phase, we can not invest much unless one sytem starts-- like establishing NGO ,Fund raising activity-- on the lines of first global chat meet--http://bajana.org/patrika/bbrain_executive_comitee.doc same process is followed -- as the case with solar lantern project--This project may be
part of meeting agenda at bangalore/chennai. afer this technical committee/executive committee/steering committee approval is a must----mala: can you involve aruna roy with us for the development of village with biharbrains/nabuur?

7. Articles Publication Goal of these articles may be to
  1. spread awareness and give clear picture about biharbrains activities, purpose, etc.
  2. give career information such as guidance towards GRE, GMAT etc, which many of
us can very precisely convey out of our own experience
3) Listen to problems and give technical guidance (kind of onsultancy ?)
4)list various oppurtunities
5) other ideas expressed by many of
you..... These articles can be uploaded at the group site and also print-outs can be distributed (e.g. during the Patna seminar). Best of the articles can be collected and put together in the form of 'book' (bi-annually ?). a. e- magazine b. printed normal magazine at interval of every six month- And the article must be taken from the members / by the students from competion/from other sources from all stream people This magazine would be indirect means for fund generation for biharbrains.
The detailed proposal for this , he would like to submit within some days to the group. I heard from Bibhuti that one of the immediate goal of Biharbrain is to open "Patna centre" with the purpose of providing international journals etc to those who need them but unable to receive. I would recommend that lets first get (a rough idea will serve the purpose) the number of members who would like to avail these oppurtunities and then list their requirements and then go for that. Remeber we should focus on the grassroot level people. Well, these are just my *random
thoughts and any kind of feedbacks are most wellcomed. I am yet to get a clear picture about this
group, its activities and purpose !!!!
