Woman burglar arrested in city

PATNA: Now woman criminals are on prowl in the state capital taking the police by surprise. What is more startling about this new brand of criminals is the fact that they are not only engaged in burglary or shop lifting but they have also been found occupied in serious crime such as kidnapping.

On Saturday night, the police came across a woman burglar, Puja, who incidentally was not interested in the traditional mode of breaking houses but also curious about looting even motorcycles and thela and rickshaws parked on roadsides, after breaking locks. Unlike the orthodox style, she would finish her "operation" by 11 pm before returning to her hideout.

This revelation came to light when the Kotwali police caught her from Hardinge Road with a revolver and four cartridges which she had concealed in her saree besides lock breaking implements. She was accompanying one Md Zafar.

Puja hails from Athmalgola village of Mokama block while Zafar belongs to Harad locality of Hazaribag town. DSP, Kotwali, Amar Singh, said that Zafar had come to Patna about a month back and made Patna Junction his 'Rain basera', while Puja, after executing her crimes goes back to Athmalgola each night. "Only four days back she met Zafar at the railway station and formed a gang", he said.

Both used to rob motorcyclists, commuters and even lift vehicles and thelas. The looted articles are hurriedly sold before both retreated to their respective places. Normally each earned Rs 400-500 daily. They had stretched their area of operation to Gandhi Maidan, Hardinge Road, Station Road, Daroga Rai Path and Bailey Road, the DSP mentioned.

Only a week back, the Jakkanpur police caught one Urmila Devi alias Chinta Devi while she was loitering around the Patna-Gaya line.

She was found carrying a revolver and four live cartridges. Though she told police that her husband had given arms to protect herself from neighbours, police have yet to ascertain her antecedents.

Earlier, women used to visit houses as sales representative and on finding lone woman or child, would lift petty household article. One such gang was caught in Sabzibagh.

But now women have started graduating in more serious crimes including kidnapping. DSP town, R K Dubey, said that one Rupa and her mother had kidnapped a businessman from Daldali.

Later, the two women sold him to a gangster, Kanhaiya Singh, in Barh and in the process earned money. Both Rupa and her mother were caught by the Gandhi Maidan police.
