Lalu pooh-poohs NDA's demand for resignation
PATNA: Mocking the NDA's demand for his resignation after he stated that Bihar governor Buta Singh was his nominee for the post, RJD chief Lalu Prasad on Wednesday ruled out stepping down over the issue. He also defended Buta Singh's letter to him seeking the posting of a railway official in Mumbai.
"Why should I resign? Have they (NDA leaders) made me the railway minister? It has become a fashion to demand resignations. Did they ever quit when we demanded their resignations?" he told journalists after filing his nomination for the national presidentship of RJD for the fifth consecutive term. Lalu said during the tenure of late Sundar Singh Bhandari as governor of Bihar, he (Lalu) had demanded his resignation several times. "But Bhandariji did not resign. They have not set any example to follow. Khuranaji (Madan Lal Khurana) enn log ko theek karenge," he quipped. Undaunted by the uproar in Parliament over his statement, Lalu taunted, "Kaun sa aasman toot para (Has the sky come down?)," alleging the NDA had been left with no issue. "As per Sarkaria Commission's recommendations, a chief minister is consulted before the appointment of the governor. Singh was appointed governor subsequent to Rabri Devi giving her nod to Centre's proposal," he clarified.
Lalu reiterated that Buta Singh had committed no mistake by writing a letter recommending the transfer of a railway official. By Rajesh Kumar, Section News Posted on Wed Aug 24, 2005 at 08:12:26 PM EST
"I have received such letters from so many ministers and governors. The main point is that no action was taken on that letter. Neither I nor Buta Singh are familiar with every official. When I received the letter, I asked the railway officials about the man. The then chairman of the railway board R K Singh told me that the man is facing a vigilance probe. I informed the governor about the development and he (Buta Singh) also agreed that the particular officer should not be transferred then," Lalu asserted.
Lalu remained unfazed about the NDA's criticism that he was using railway functions as a platform for airing political views. "Railway aur politics alag kiya ja sakta hai?" he wondered. He also ridiculed the BJP's charge about inclusion of a large number of fake names in the electorate list during the RJD regime. "BJP is a party which creates rumours and issues false statements. It had earlier alleged that the ballot boxes of the panchayat polls were being used in the parliamentary polls to change ballots," he remarked. He said he would meet chief election commissioner B B Tandon and apprise him of the views of his party on making PICs (photo-identity cards) compulsory for voting. "The voting rights of the weaker sections are getting affected. Even when there was an option of 14 alternative documents in the absence of PICs, a large section among the downtrodden who do not have driving licences, passports or gun licences failed to exercise their franchise," he said.
