BSP to go it alone in Bihar polls
PATNA: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati announced here on Friday that her party would go it alone in the forthcoming Bihar assembly polls.
"We will not have any understanding with any political party -- either the RJD or the BJP. We will have an understanding with various sections of the society this time," she remarked at a state-level party workers' meet at Gandhi Maidan on Friday. During her one-and-a-half-hour-long speech, she repeatedly mentioned that her party was not against the upper castes, appealing to them to shed their "Manuwadi attitude" and join it.
The state-level meet of the party, held as a run-up to the state assembly polls, had its dramatic moments, with the state secretary of the party Hareram Pandey being arrested by the police while moving towards the venue. Pandey was arrested by the Buxar police in connection with a non-bailable warrant pending against him. He is involved in over one dozen cases including one related to murder. He was taken to Gandhi Maidan police station by the police. Pandey had unsuccessfully contested the last assembly poll from Brahampur assembly segment and has been booked under Criminal Control Act since 1995. The Buxar police arrived in Patna to arrest him after getting a tip-off that he would be attending the meeting.
Mayawati, during her speech, also spoke on the Taj Corridor case and charged the BJP and Congress with falsely implicating her in the case. The CVC has recently said that a valid case was made out against her. "The BJP is Nagnath and Congress is Saapnath," she said alleging that while the BJP framed her in the case, the Congress was wanting it to linger on for political reasons. She pointed out that the then chief secretary of UP was the secretary of the board dealing with the Taj Corridor project and if there had been any irregularities action should be initiated against him and other persons concerned. She claimed that as chief minister she had nothing to do with the project. "I am not perturbed by this farji (false) case. I know that atrocities against me will increase as I rise higher and fight more strongly for the Bahujan Samaj," remarked the former CM of UP. She claimed that she had not extended support to RJD after the last assembly polls. "I had to stop the NDA and communal forces from capturing power in Bihar. Therefore, I extended support to the UPA. But the BSP always fights elections on its own steam," she said stating that RJD was also a "Manuwadi" party. The BSP leader asked her party workers in Bihar to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level. He also asked workers to give the party financial support to meet the cost of elections. "If you want your self-respect to remain intact, a Bahujan Samaj government must be installed at the Centre and in the states," she thundered.
