Bihar police team in Delhi to nab Siwan MP

SIWAN: The Bihar police have turned up the heat on controversial RJD MP Mohd Shahabuddin with a team of police officers now in the national Capital to seek the help of Delhi police and arrest him.

As many as eight non-bailable warrants (NBWs) issued against the Siwan strongman are pending execution. With Bihar assembly elections likely in October-November, the Election Commission has given an ultimatum to the state government to execute all the pending 70,000-odd NBWs by September 9.

Siwan SP Sanjay Singh said on Friday the police would not allow Shahabuddin to surrender and would rather arrest him. While refusing to set a time frame for his arrest, Singh said a police team headed by Inspector P Kumar has already reached Delhi for the purpose.

The police team has taken all the eight warrants of arrest against the MP, the SP said, adding the police will not remain a mute spectator if the MP decides to surrender in court with fanfare. "It would be a different matter if he surrenders clandestinely," the SP said.

Reports reaching from Delhi on Friday evening said the Delhi police have expressed inability to execute the warrants as they were not duly stamped and the contents were also ineligible. When asked about it, the Siwan SP said he was yet to get any such information. "If that is the case, we will send another team with proper documents," he said.

The eight NBWs have been issued in connection with various cases of kidnapping and murder and Arms and Explosives Acts.

Meanwhile, a fresh FIR was lodged against Shahabuddin and his wife, brother and father on Friday for not surrendering their firearms despite the cancellation of their licences by the district administration. Siwan DM Santosh Kumar Mal ordered the institution of the FIR on Thursday under the provisions of Arms Act.

Shahabuddin was first elected to Bihar legislative assembly in 1990 from Ziradei assembly constituency as an Independent. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996 from Siwan and since then has retained the seat. Over 40 criminal cases are pending against the MP who has of late emerged as a close aide of RJD chief and Union minister Lalu Prasad.
