Shahabuddin:'Catch me if you can'
PATNA: The state government claim to have activated its machinery for nabbing Mohd Shahabuddin notwithstanding, the controversial Siwan MP on Saturday continued to thumb his nose at the police.
While a police team from Siwan visited the MP's residence in Delhi only to find it locked, the MP told TOI over phone he was in Nainital and is now in Mumbai on a three-day vacation as the Lok Sabha session would resume on Monday. "Not that I am hiding from the police... I am not an absconder,"he said, adding he has been speaking to people, including mediamen, and they all know where he is. He said he will "try"to be in Delhi to attend the LS session on Monday. Asked how he is not an absconder when as many as eight non-bailable warrants are pending execution against him, Shahabuddin retorted, "warrants can be issued even against those who may not have committed an offence. Abhi aap leekh rahi hain. Agar aap galat likhengi, toh main aap pe warrant laga sakta hoon (if you write anything wrong against me, I can get a warrant issued against you)." As if throwing down the gauntlet to Siwan SP Sanjay Kumar Singh, who had on Friday said the police would not let the MP surrender if he does it with fanfare and would arrest him, Shahabuddin asserted, "I am not going to be arrested."He said he will instead appear before the court to apprise it of his defence.
Meanwhile, the Siwan police administration sent another team to Delhi on Saturday. This followed reports that the Delhi police administration had expressed its inability to cooperate with the Siwan police team to arrest Shahabuddin as the team had gone with xerox copies of the warrants which were not legible. The other team which left on Saturday has all the proper documents with it, sources said. Even as Shahabuddin has been easily accessible to the media, the police team camping in Delhi are clueless about him. Inspector Pulender Singh of the police team in Delhi told newsmen in Delhi that he did not know where Shahabuddin was and that he did not have his cell number. "But he will be arrested if we see him,"Singh said. Bihar DGP A R Sinha also said in Patna the RJD leader will be "definitely arrested". "A proper requisition for the arrest of Shahabuddin has been sent to Delhi,"said the DGP who only a few days ago had explained the police failure to arrest the MP saying "How can I arrest Shahabuddin when he is in Delhi". Speaking to TOI, the DGP reiterated that people keep targeting Shahabuddin all the time. "Let's not discuss individual cases. There are so many NBWs that have to be executed,"he said. With Shahabuddin declaring that he will be returning to Delhi on Monday to attend the LS session, he has virtually challenged the state police to `catch me, if you can."
