Indian leaders in Pak good books
PATNA: The popularity of Indian leaders among Pakistanis today is on the rise who not only hold them in high esteem but have also studied and carried out research on them in various universities. Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Rajendra Prasad and others are among their list of favourites. Besides, several books and autobiographies of these leaders have already been published there.
"Pakistan has undergone a philosophical revolution and the new generation has absolutely no malice towards any Indian leader,"prominent Pakistani historian and author Abu Salam Shahjanpuri told TOI here on Saturday. Currently in the city in connection with the prestigious Khuda Bakhsh extension lecture on the theme "Maulana Azad and Pakistani Historians - A Survey", Abu said: "You will be surprised to know that more than one edition of Gandhi's autobiography "My Experiment with Truth"under the title "Talash-e-Haq"(In Search of Truth), Nehru's "Meri Kahani", Rajendra Prasad's autobiography and prison diary of Vijay Laxmi Pundit have been printed in Pakistan and turned out to be quite popular." This sounds strange given that Pakistan had banned books authored by Maulana Azad for his opposition to the two-nation theory and creation of Pakistan. But, as Abu claimed, there has been a revolutionary change in perception on Indian leaders among the Pakistanis today. "Now his books are part of syllabi in various Pakistani universities and over a hundred researchers have done their M Phil and Ph D on Maulana Azad and his reference is often made in the National Assembly with respect,"said the sexagenarian author, who had migrated to Pakistan in his teens.
On his part, besides having edited Azad's "India Wins Freedom", Abu also played a key role in establishing the Abul Kalam Azad Research Institute in Karachi, of which he is currently the director. Pointing out that the earlier bias against Azad and other Indian leaders among academic circles in Pakistan has now given way to more objective analyses and assessments, he expressed the hope that "such objectivity"would enable the people to have "better perception"of past events which have, so far, not received the "dispassionate treatment"they deserved. Author of over 150 books and monographs with an area of interest in freedom struggle in the sub-continent and history and politics of India and Pakistan, Abu had to face severe criticism when he established the Karachi-based institute on Maulana Azad and was even branded a Congressman. However, he refused to admit that the change in perception of Pakistanis vis-a-vis Indian leaders was because of his efforts alone and made special mention of Yusuf Salim Chishti, Syed Abdullah, Nabi Bakhsh Baluch, Ghulam Rasool Mehar, Shorish Kashmiri and Ahmad Nadim Qasmi, all historians and authors of Pakistan, for publishing and propagating the thoughts and works of Azad. "The Pakistanis today have no hatred or malice towards any Indian personality because those who had propagated the politics of hatred are no more and the new generation wants to live in peace and harmony while struggling with their own problems,"he added. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-1212360,curpg-2.cms
