Patna varsity girls outsmart boys in exams

PATNA: Patna University (PU) girls have outsmarted boys once again in academics. They have not only fared pretty well in the three-year degree course examinations but also secured all the top positions in almost all the honours subjects in the faculties of arts, science and commerce.

The results of final 2005 BA, BSc and BCom honours examinations of PU were announced recently. In the faculty of science, Sonika Rana of Patna Women's College (PWC) secured the highest marks (638 out of 800) in physics honours followed by Sadaf Fatma (632 marks) of Magadh Mahila College (MMC).

Madhu Kumari Gupta and Pratima Kumari of MMC secured the first two positions in chemistry honours examination. They got 628 and 612 marks respectively.

While Iffat Jamal of MMC topped the list of successful candidates in zoology honours examination by securing 661 marks, Richa Arya of the same college secured top position in botany honours examination.

Tulika Rohatgi of Science College topped in geology honours examination by securing 627 marks. In the faculty of humanities and social sciences, Priyanka of Patna Women's College topped the history honours examination by securing 581 marks.

While Shikha Kumari and Shilpita Bannerji of PWC have topped the list of successful candidates in political science and economics honours examinations respectively, Juli Kumari of B N College has topped the Hindi honours examination.

Akanksha Rani and Preeti Singh of Patna Women's College have been the joint toppers of sociology honours examination. Neha Aishwarya and Shweta Rani of Patna Women's College have topped the psychology honours and geography honours examinations of PU respectively.

Name any honours subject, and the topper is invariably a girl. In fact, boys have been able to secure top positions mostly in such subjects in which there were few girls.

NAAC-accredited PWC has created a record of sorts by sending in maximum number of toppers. The boys of Science College and Patna College have been left far behind so far as the honours examination results are concerned.

Why have the boys failed so miserably in making the mark? Says Magadh Mahila College principal Sukhda Kumari, "Girls are more disciplined and hence they take their studies seriously."
