Education official kidnapped

HAJIPUR: Making mockery of policing in the high-profile Raghopur assembly constituency represented by former Bihar CM Rabri Devi, more than half a dozen armed criminals thrashed Raghopur block education officer (BEO) Chotelal Ram and abducted him from Saidabad middle school on Thursday night.

Vaishali SP Kamal Kishore said Ram was sleeping in a room of the school when criminals attacked him. Nine other teachers were present at the school at the time of incident.

The SP said criminals took away Ram towards Bakhtiyarpur in Patna and crossed river Ganga on a boat. The boat has been seized and the boatman is being interrogated.

The gang involved in the kidnapping has been identified, he added. He said the recent appointment of "shiksha mitras" in the block's school might be the reason behind the abduction.

Police are conducting raids at suspected hideouts of criminals and the special striking force of the district have been pressed into service, he added.

"The entire diara area in Vaishali and Patna districts has been sealed and the rescue operation has been launched," the SP said.

Some villagers said the BEO had done undue favour to some undeserving candidates during the appointment of "shiksha mitras" in Raghopur block recently.

According to sources, most of the teachers do not attend classes regularly in the primary and middle schools of Raghopur block.

"Teachers rarely attend classes, but their presence is marked in attendance registers. Ram is responsible for it," said Akhilesh Rai, a local resident.
