Bihari Pride and Prejudice
by Raj Shekhar
Toronto, Canada February 19, 2005 Bihar has become a land of destitute and a deprived population facing violence and lack of law and order under the corrupt politicians of current days as well as in the past. Criminalization and casteism has taken very firm hold of politics and all the political parties are making the common people to suffer from this malaise. These self-serving politicians and mafia of criminals have given this land a cradle of non-violence, a new title of "Bihar, the bad place". What are the historical or cultural reasons that Bihar (inclusive of Jharkhand) failed to develop economically compared to the other states of India? Ask anyone about the reason for this degradation or disease killing Bihar, and almost 9 out of 10 people from the academics, politicians and any ordinary citizen would immediately jump to answer: Caste-based structure. Absolutely right! However, we also suffer from other malaise; lack of sub-nationalism or lack of pride in feeling being Bihari. A person coming from a Bihari background is often looked upon as a sign of being backward or greeted with an expected immediate response with chuckle "Oh, land of Lalu". Yes, Lalu Prasad Yadav, a comedian by playing quite unashamedly to the hungry media gallery; a villain responsible for corruption and gross underdevelopment; as well as a hero in the eyes of many for keeping virtually single-handedly, the communal forces at bay, also comes from Bihar. Yet, Bihar is also known as Dharmbhumi, Karmbhumi as well as Matribhumi of the many great Indian personalities in whom the whole nation, as well as our Indian culture takes pride in, irrespective of religion. This sentiment of feeling a proud Bihari, seems to be hijacked by the rest of India as we Bihari always took pride in being Indian first and of so-on-so caste second and then of a particular religion. We acknowledge very last 'coming from Bihar' if reminded by someone. Whereas people from other state never fail to show their pride in being a Tamil, Punjabi or Bengali, we Biharis rarely take pride in being Bihari. Casteism is no doubt eating into development remains a real problem in Bihar, but a lack taking pride in being Bihari identity, in spite of a great history and unparallel tradition of achievement in past is another hindrance blocking our growth. From Gautam Buddha's Vihar (Bihar) where teachings of non-violence spread all around the globe, to Mahaveer's preaching of non-violence encompassed not only the human but any form of life, to the Emperor Asoka who denounced violence after witnessing the horror of brutality against humanity himself and established the true secular Rajdharm to promote the religious harmony. Who can forget his grandfather Chandragupta and his brilliant counselor and friend Chanakya, who drove away the Greek garrison that Alexander had left in Taxila and established the empire of the Maurya Dynasty. This great empire covered the whole of North India and part of Afghanistan, from the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea with capital situated in modern city of Patna. A place of knowledge, the University of Nalanda near Patna outdated one of the oldest universities of the world - the University of Oxford - by many hundred years and attracted students from all over India and China.

In the medieval times Sher Shah, a Bihari from Sahasram, defeated Humayun in the early stages of Mughal empire and drove him out of India and showed the efficiency in administration and land reform in his short ruled kingdom as he died accidentally. Another great Bihari after Sher Shah to challenge the mighty Mughal Aurangzeb was a man of courage, Guru Govind Singh, the last guru of Sikhs also hailed from Patna City, Bihar. He did not just give an entire new look and identity to Sikhs with the five "K" features, but transformed them into a proud and powerful military community. 'Raj Kumar Shukla, an ordinary farmer from Bettiah', Bihar, (a name and his native place probably not even mentioned in Indian History), nevertheless, the credit goes to him to recognize the power of Mahatma Gandhi of the South Africa fame, to pursue him and bring him to Champaran, Bihar to make his Karmbhumi after South Africa. An initiation of Gandhi's battle with the British started from Champaran which gave a new turn to the Indian struggle for freedom through non-violence. Incidentally, Mahatma Gandhi writes in his autobiography that before he founded his Satyagrah Ashram in Ahmedabad, to choose a proper place for his Ashram after returning from South Africa to India, he had short listed three places and Vaidyanathdham (Deoghar), Bihar (now Jharkhand) was one of them.
After standing on the peak of the summit of past achievements and progress, the current Bihar seems to be spiraling downward and has touched the bottom of stagnation in all types of positive growth, compared to the rest of India and loosing as well as the true Bihari image - brave but simple, tough but humble. We better start taking pride in this Bihari image from Gautam for awakening the masses also to discard evils of casteism to Gandhi to make Bihar his Karmbhumi; from Chanakya for his political wisdom to Lalu as well for his refusal to compromise with the communal force. Caste and sectarian politics is eating up Bihar like a termite infested home. But how can we get rid of this menace from our society? Let us face the facts: Casteism is deeply rooted in our Indian culture, in particular Bihar and Jharkhand. It is an axis of evil in all respect from politics to day to day life style and touching almost every Bihari. We would not be able to get this addictive casteism disease out that easily as it has infected our mind and behavior. The politicians will keep on exploiting the status quo to their advantage. One has to understand that caste, like any race will remain the way it is. It has a permanent value - nobody can alter a particular race by washing or polishing the colour of skin or changing the physical features. Similarly, if we consider caste on same level as any race, and as long as they are not harming our society, the issue will be irrelevant. The caste or race itself is not the problem. The problem is in the discrimination based on caste system and the bigotry. It is something like a famous slogan in Mrs. Indira Gandhi's days when she said: "Garibi Hatao" and her party led by Sanjay Gandhi started to move the Garib population from the slums of Delhi. In the same way, if people start to remove the caste itself rather than casteism, the vicious cycle of exploitation based on caste and creed will be not stopped. One may ask how should we discard this habit? Rather than attacking caste, one has to find the root cause of people taking "advantage of caste" which has become the tool of the trade being used widely by the political parties and the decision makers. Why is there any discrimination? Is it not possible to find a simple solution? Look around, from top to bottom. All politicians talk against caste based politics and bash each other for discriminating their vote banks. The politicians, intellectuals, academics and the media included, openly discussing the caste equations and giving a kind of its fixed value to the caste politics. Can anyone imagine if murder or bribery equations are also discussed in a same form as caste based vote bank equation as deciding factors in any election? Sadly, this caste issue dominates in any intellectual or media discussion. To find a solution, for sure we need an electoral reform. If caste is a stepping stool to corruptly achieve anything, whether political power house or a simple thing such as getting a job or business, it must be pulled out. If it provides a sense of security to any community, this sense of security must be given in some other way than caste-based political shelter. The need of dependency on caste based expectations itself will be irrelevant if the reason for caste based voting bank is eliminated. If the election commission of India can decide to move the criminal politicians from one jail to another because they might influence the local voters from their nearby located jails, sure they can also stop caste based issues being discussed and manipulated to lure the voters. The electoral reform must take care of loopholes so that any need of securing a particular interest by any caste-based politician does not arise. Any issues related to casteism will become like a toothless tiger. Any idea starts with simple question and this issue is no different than any other problems faced before. We are all guilty in making and holding this monster's hand in a false sense of security. One has to realize, how to beat this source of monstrous degradation and help each other escape from this senseless and dark prison to find freedom. If you have seen any fishermen catching sea crabs, you will notice that, they dump all these dumbest creatures in a bucket, and they do not have to put a lid on the bucket as when one of the crab tries to get out, the others will pull it back in. It offers a valuable lesson to us, as some of us are not much smarter than these crabs. When some of us try to work hard to achieve our dreams by escaping from this prison of caste politics, some of our fellow Bihari will pull us back in as if to make fun of us for just trying. To get to this fresh air of freedom, everybody has to work and help each other otherwise we will remain in the bucket as those backward crabs. Any land without a pride in its people, history and achievements remains week and becomes weaker when it is not backed by the development and progress. People cannot just live on any ideology of pride, it is linked to better life in having from the basic needs of food, water, shelter to education, health to law and order. This sense of security in having all the basic necessities must be respected by a government in power- as better life also demands dignity. We better start take pride in our Bihar and find a solution to this senseless prejudice of caste-based politics.
