RSS, VHP welcomes Advani resignation

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) Sunday welcomed the decision taken by Bharatiya Janata Party president L.K. Advani to resign from his post in December, but both organisations said there was no pressure from their sides to resign well ahead of time.
Senior leader and spokesperson of the Sangh, Ram Madhav said here that it would seriously consider the charges levelled by Advani against the RSS's interference in the day to day running of the party.

"He has made the suggestions. These will be discussed in the proper forum and in an appropriate manner," Madhav told mediapersons.

On the concluding day of the Chennai conclave of the party Advani made the comment on RSS while announcing his resignation as party chief by December.

Madhav said the decision on Advani's resignation had been taken some time ago but no deadline had been set.

Denying any RSS pressure on Advani to quit, he said the resignation has come earlier than expected.

VHP's Giriraj Kishore said: "We welcome the decision but there was no pressure. Had we wanted to pressurise we would have done so long ago."

Responding to a question on the relationship between the Sangh and BJP, Madhav said: "There is no crisis. We shall all sit together and discuss the issues that have come up."

He refused comment on whether Advani's resignation would affect the BJP's prospects in the Bihar polls, saying the RSS was not concerned about elections.

Madhav said the controversy over Advani praising Pakistan founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah during his visit to Pakistan in June did not have any immediate bearing on the resignation.

"All that is too old," he added.
