Stir against new IIT-JEE format gains momentum

PATNA: The Central government's decision to bring in changes in the IIT-JEE format has sparked off students' agitation in the state capital likes of which was seen during the initial phase of famous students' agitation of 1974.

Police resorted to lobbing teargas shells followed by lathi-charge to disperse a stong mob of students, demonstrating against the proposed IIT-JEE format which is in the offing, at the busy Dak Bunglow Crossing here on Thursday.

Raising slogans against Union HRD minister, Arjun Singh, for toying with the idea to change IIT-JEE format, the students demanded continuation with the old format.

"Or else, the agitation will continue," they thundered. While students owing allegiance to the ABVP were demonstrating at the Dak Bunglow Crossing, students belonging to Left parties under the banner of SFI, AISF came from other direction shouting slogans and carrying placards against the Union government.

Initially, it was apprehended that both the right and Left-wing students would clash. However, much to the relief of the administration the two groups instead greeted each other by clapping and raising slogans "Chhatra Ekta Zindabad".

District administration officials persuaded the students to constitute a five-member delegations so that they could be taken to Rajbhavan for a meeting with the governor, who would in turn refer their demand to the Union government. H

However, the agitating students did not pay heed to it and kept on demonstrating. Earlier, another group of students burnt effigies and tyres in front of Patna University office to register their protest.

A senior IPS officer told TOI that if this situation is not tackled immediately it might snowball into a major political issue.

Different students' organisations have announced phase-wise agitation to press for withdrawal of the proposed change in the IIT-JEE format.

All India Students' Association (AISA) has announced that a students' conference would be held on September 17 to protest the "injustice" meted out to IIT-JEE aspirants.

This would be followed with observance of protest day and burning of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's effigy on September 18.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) said that its members would demonstrate before the university headquarters throughout the state on Friday to protest Thursday's lathi-charge besides blocking movement of trains at Patna, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur, Gaya, and Muzaffarpur.
