SMS facility in BSNL landlines

PATNA: The Patna Telephones has provided free SMS facility on all the landline phones within Patna. With this, people using landline phones of the BSNL can send SMSes through their phone to all BSNL and MTNL landline phones besides BSNL mobile phones within the country.

Giving this information, principal general manager of Patna Telephones Sunil Parihar said that in order to avail of this facility, the landline phone users should install SMS enabled phone sets which were available in the market here.

He said the SMS facility was provided free of cost ten days ago after the caller identity (CLI) facility was made available on all landline telephone connections.

Prior to this, the telephone subscribers in Patna were required to get the clip facility for the CLI from their respective telephone exchanges.

The SMS facility was made available in Patna around three months ago but for this the clip facility for the CLI was required for which the subscribers had to apply in their respective telephone exchanges.

With the Patna Telephones providing CLI facility on all the landline phones here, it made free the SMS facility on all the landline phones.

"There is no hassles now as the telephone subscribers can send SMS around the country on BSNL landlines and mobile phones," Parihar said.

While the access code for SMS service is 1256, for sending the SMS the subscriber has to dial 125600 to BSNL's Kolkata-based SM centre from wherethe SMS to the landline or mobile phone numbers is routed around the country.

Parihar explained that while activating the SMS service, the subscribers have to make a blank SMS call on number 771 and following which they would receive the reply SMS recorded.

"The SMS calls can be made thereafter," Parihar said. In the last three months, the response of the people towards SMS service was poor.

Moreover, the burden of applying for the clip facility for the CLI may have discouraged many subscribers. Besides, there was lack of awareness among the landline subscribers about availability of SMS facility on landline phones.

"This prompted the BSNL to make an offer for free SMS calls in order to make the SMS service popular among them," said a BSNL official.

A high increase in demand of prepaid mobile-Excel-connection and its rising popularity had made the BSNL to see that the demand of landlines should not recede.

The provision of SMS facility free on the landline phones was the natural consequence, said the official.
