CPI rejects Cong proposal to ally with RJD

PATNA: The Congress on Saturday made an abortive bid to win over the CPI to its side to thwart the move of the formation of a third front in the state.

A three-member Congress delegation, comprising AICC general secretary and in-charge of Bihar affairs Digvijay Singh, AICC secretary Iqbal Singh and BPCC president Sadanand Singh, visited the CPI state headquarters, Ajay Bhawan, here on Saturday.

The Congress delegation held talks with senior CPI leaders, including state CPI secretary Badri Narayan Lal, party central executive committee member and former state secretary Jalaluddin Ansari and state secretariat members, Upendra Nath Mishra and Jabbar Alam.

According to Ansari, the Congress leaders tried to impress upon the CPI leaders need to go for a poll alliance with the RJD-Congress combine to ensure the defeat of communal forces under the NDA umbrella. But, the CPI rejected the proposal, Ansari said.

He said the Congress leaders said any division in secular votes would help strengthen communal forces, but the CPI leaders, however, did not agree with Congress leaders' view.

"We categorically conveyed to them that our analysis of the situation is totally different from that of Congress.

The CPI, on the basis of the feedback from the grassroots workers, felt that if a third front is not floated, a large number of voters who are now disenchanted with the RJD and its leader, Lalu Prasad, would vote for NDA as there would be no scope for them to vent their anger against the misdeeds of RJD regime," said Ansari.
