RAIPUR: Two days after a landmine blast triggered by Maoists killed 24 CRPF jawans, the Chhattisgarh government moved to ban CPI (Maoist) and its sister outfits. Monday's decision makes Chhattisgarh the second state after Andhra Pradesh to do so.
Reeling from the impact of the attack on a state already struggling to contain a resurgent Maoist movement, the decision was arrived at quickly during an emergency meeting of the state cabinet presided by chief minister Raman Singh.
"The state cabinet approved the draft of Chhattisgarh Special People's Security Ordinance which provides for a ban on such organisations," state home minister Ram Vichar Netam said after the meeting.
The proposed draft ordinance would be forwarded to governor Sushil Kumar Shinde, currently abroad, for his approval.
The state will then seek Presidential assent to the legislation, he added. "The ordinance is being brought to effectively control Maoist activities," Netam added.
