While inaugurating the two-day seminar on 'Speedy Criminal Justice' at Sri Krishna Memorial Hall in Patna on Saturday, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar asked the top police brass to make a list of all convicts who had been languishing in various state prisons on minor charges so the state could arrange to release them to make room for more hardened criminals.
The seminar that has been arranged to review the pros and cons of the speedy trial introduced after the NDA government came into power last November was attended by top bureaucrats including the Home Secretary, the Director General of Police (DGP), Superintendents of Police (SPs) and District Magistrates (DMs).
"Because of the speedy trial, the situation at already over-crowded jails have gone from bad to worse and until we find other arrangements, it seems only logical to release those who continue to remain in prison for minor crimes," said a senior police official.
