Not just steel: Bokaro, a city of superkids

It has a population of about 5 lakh and is better known for its steel. Now Bokaro is increasingly becoming famous for its super kids. The city now regularly sends a number of students to premier institutions across the country, including 32 to IIT this year.

Jharkhand's Bokaro Steel Ltd (BSL) township spread over 11 sectors also sent several other students several Indian services and institutes like National Defence Academy (NDA), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) premier medical colleges and other corporate sectors.

Now this city is gaining a reputation as the city of schools, boasting of premier schools like St Xaviers, Delhi Public school (DPS), Chinmaya Mission, DAV, apart from 40 middle and high secondary schools in the public sector. It has a record of 400-500 students qualifying every other year for premier institutes as well as bagging coveted posts both in India and abroad.

Not surprising then that not only locals comprising children of BSL employees but students from neighbouring states like west Bengal, Bihar and Orissa are studying here.

Anil Palta, DIG Bokaro and a former Xaverian from here, counts at least two dozen IAS and IPS officers from Bokaro of various cadres on his fingers. ``The school (Xaviers) celebrating its 40th year in December has an alumni of judges, a professor of surgery at Harvard and several professionals at the Silicon Valley too,'' he said. The mantra for academic excellence, most school principals feel, is the presence of an elite and educated class with little or no digression apart from academics.

``This is a small and quiet township comprising technocrats who would love to see their children at the top,'' said Palta. ``A minimal presence of theatres or clubs also helps. Students have no option but to pore over books. Besides colony culture also creates a sense of competition among both and parents and children.''

Principal Hemlata S Mohan of DPS which has the distinction of 32 students qualifying for the IITs this year said the school has a practice of setting targets and ensuring that they are met. According to Debashish Adhikary, registrar of Xaviers, there has been a flurry of professionals from this school from the 1970s, which lead to many qualifying for the all-India services and then the 1980 and 1990s which saw an equal number of students taking the corporate world by storm. ``Students qualify for the NDA regularly from every batch,'' he said.

``The results of Class XII too have been very impressive all along and six students have bagged gold medals this year. We do not believe in chalk and talk but participatory education,'' he said.
