Lalu backs Shakuni in endgame?

Bihar will witness by-elections for the two Lok Sabha seats Bhagalpur and Nalanda, on November 6.

What is new this time, however, is that the poll results could sew a new political equation and might further marginalise Lalu Yadav on his home turf.

The man, whose rule of 15 years was uprooted last year, is drawing flak for unilaterally fielding Shakuni Chaudhary as an RJD candidate in Bhagalpur.

Chaudhary, a former minister, is also a massacre case-accused.

The issue rankling UPA leaders though is not his tainted image, but that the secular votes would get divided.

To further wreck the alliance unity, the RJD chief is backing the JD(U) rebel Arun Kumar, who is contesting as an independent candidate from Nalanda, the homeland of Nitish Kumar. Lalu’s allies are enraged and have pledged not to support any of his nominees.

Cong dumps him

The state Congress has decided to dump Lalu and back the CPM nominee Subodh Rai at Bhagalpur and Gaya Singh (CPI) at Nalanda.

The Lok Jan Shakti Party (LJP), too, has made a similar move, making the combination of four parties a formidable force. “The Congress’ decision to dump the RJD was a long-awaited one and should be construed as the beginning of a new era,” former Bihar Congress president Ram Jatan Sinha told Deccan Herald. Sinha was removed from the post last year for his strong opposition to an alliance with Lalu.

“If the party wants to regain its lost glory, the first thing it needs to do is stop riding piggyback on the RJD,” added Sinha.

The LJP, another constituent of the UPA, is also breathing fire against Lalu. “The RJD chief has proved once again that he can’t be trusted in an era of coalition,” averred LJP’s vice-president Ranjan Yadav.

Leaders of the CPM and the CPI, the two age-old allies of the RJD, are equally sore with Lalu for jettisoning them.

“By putting up his candidates, the RJD supremo will split the secular votes,” argued Gaya Singh of CPI, and blamed the Railway Minister for wrecking the unity of UPA.

The Opposition NDA, which has fielded former Union Minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain from Bhagalpur and Ram Swarup Prasad from Nalanda, is excited over the divided Opposition.

“The election will be a cakewalk for us at both the constituencies,” said a confident Nitish Kumar, who feels the bypolls should also be perceived as a referendum on his 11-month-old governance.
