Security Tight for Monday Polls in Bhagalpur and Nalanda

The administration in Nalanda and Bhagalpur has heightened the security in the two districts where Parliamentary by-polls, necessitated by the resignation of Janata Dal (U) leader Nitish Kumar and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushil Kumar Modi, open on Monday morning to decide the fates of 21 candidates.

Polling will be held at 1,490 booths in Nalanda to accommodate nearly 13 lakh voters while in Bhagalpur, over 14 lakh voters will be eligible to exercise their franchise at 1,572 polling booths.

Prominent players in the fray involve BJP leader and former Union Minister Shahnawaz Hussain, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Shakuni Chowdhary, Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate Gaya Singh, CPI-M candidate Subodh Rai, and Independent candidate Arun Kumar.

With a shoot-at-sight order in place to deal with any troublemaker, security officials from 60 companies of para-military forces and 30 companies of Bihar Military Police will be monitoring the booths from land, water, and air to prevent any irregularities in the voting constituencies
