Nitish Bats for Vajpayee as PM Candidate

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday threw his weight behind BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee, saying he was the undisputed leader of the NDA and the coalition's most suitable prime ministerial candidate.

"Where is the vacancy for the post of NDA leader," he asked mediapersons after his Janata Darbar programme on Monday. Nitish was reacting to a question on the JD(U)'s stance if the BJP projected somebody other than Vajpayee as the prime ministerial candidate.

"Vajpayeeji is the undisputed leader and the most suitable prime ministerial candidate if the NDA returns to power. No vacancy exists for the time being. If there is a vacancy, we will think about it and inform the media," he said.

Nitish, however, refused to comment on the BJP's plan to rake up the Ayodhya issue and play the Hindutva card. "The BJP is an independent party and has the right to choose its agenda. But the NDA has a definite agenda and they are bound to follow it as long as they are part of it," he said.

Nitish emphasised that contentious issues like Ayodhya and scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution were not part of the NDA agenda. "We have clarified that Ayodhya issue should be solved either through talks or though courts," he said.

Favouring reservation for socially and educationally backward Dalit Christians and Muslims, Nitish said, "We will abide by the Centre's decision in this regard."

In Varanasi, Lalu Prasad Yadav attacked the BJP for raking up the Ram temple issue. Terming it an "electoral gimmick", he said "the BJP's deliberate attempts to rake up the temple issue ahead of state polls in Uttar Pradesh was aimed at polarising the electorate on communal lines."

Lalu described Vajpayee as a liberal politician, but said L.K. Advani was a fundamentalist. In Delhi, the CPM too attacked the BJP, saying the political resolution it adopted at its Lucknow national council session smacked of communal and divisive politics.

"The record of the BJP in government both at the Centre and in the states has shown the people that a right-wing communal platform is no answer to their problems. The BJP leadership is unable to realise that its politics and the ideology it espouses are no more in tune with the aspirations of the people,'' the CPM's politburo said in a statement.
