Alarmed by the last Saturday disaster in Bhagalpur where a bridge in the process of being torn down collapsed on a train below killing nearly three dozen passengers, the General Manager of East Central Railways S. K. Vij, on Tuesday inspected the old Chiraiyantand Bridge to ensure proper safety measures were being taken to avoid the repetition of the Bhagalpur accident.
Vij told the engineers to ensure utmost safety and convenience of the people below the bridge by carrying out the demolition work only between midnight and 2:00 am and enforce a speed limit of 20 kmph for all vehicles passing under it.
It will take about 60 hours to completely bring the old bridge down and for two hours each night, the work should be completed in about a month, he said.
Vij was accompanied by chief construction engineer B. S. Banga and Deputy General Manager, East-Central Railways, A. K. Chandra.
