Dalai Lama blesses Nitish
NALANDA: Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday sought blessings of the Dalai Lama for the development of "backward Bihar" and the Buddhist spiritual leader obliged him, cautioning at the same time that hard work has no substitute.
In what seemed to be a one-on-one interaction between the two at the inauguration of a three-day international conference on "The heritage of Nalanda", the Dalai turned towards the chief minister from the dais to tell him, "you should know the limitations of the powers of blessing... unless you work, it doesn't work." The conference, being held in the Xuanzang memorial hall in Nalanda, is being attended by delegates from 30-odd countries. The Dalai said he often asks his friends jocularly why Lord Buddha chose a hot and poor state. "But with the kind of commitment the CM has made to his electors, the state seems set to develop and prosper," he said referring to the CM's speech in which he said, "I take a pledge to work for the development and prosperity of the state". Regarded as a living symbol of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition that emanated from Nalanda, the Dalai offered an advice to modern-day politicians: "Today's Politicians should follow great traditions of Nalanda in politics."
He said being a Tibetan Buddhist he is very close to this place and added, "Buddhism, I think, is a pure tradition of Nalanda." The conference has been organised by the Ashoka Mission, a premier Buddhist organisation of New Delhi, in collaboration with the Union ministry of tourism and culture, Bihar department of tourism and Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, an autonomous institution under the Union ministry of culture. More than 200 scholars from Bhutan, Tibet, China, Hongkong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Thailand, Mongolia, Taiwan and the US are attending the conference. On this occasion, the Dalai also released a coffee table book on Bihar tourism. Titled 'Bihar: An Enlightening Experience', the book has been jointly brought out by Bihar department of tourism and the Times of India group. The 152-page book contains information about the state's tourist sites, handicrafts, culture and heritage, among other things. He also inaugurated an exhibition of photographs of archaeological finds and ruins of Nalanda. Earlier, MP Nirmala Deshpande, who is the chairperson of the organising committee of the conference, welcomed the guests. State tourism secretary R S Tewari was also present at the function. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-1411837,curpg-3.cms
