Nitish's gift to teachers: A colourful Holi

PATNA: University and college teachers of Magadh University (MU) will have a colourful Holi this time. The reason: The Nitish Kumar government has been kind enough to ensure payment of their salaries for the month of February before Holi.

These teachers, who were never paid their salaries, particularly during the festivals, under the Lalu-Rabri raj, have expressed their deep sense of gratitude to the new government.

The much-relieved teachers are confident that the government will definitely improve the overall academic environment in the state universities and colleges in the larger interest of the students.

A senior teacher of Magadh University, Rajiv Kamal Srivastava, said he hardly remembered getting his salary on the occasion of Holi during the past one decade. "The teachers have valid reasons to feel thrilled as now they have been getting their salaries on a regular basis," he said.

Teachers' promotion: MU teachers have welcomed the decision of the new government to give promotion to them under the time-bound scheme.

These teachers have, however, urged the government to adopt a definite policy which could benefit those teachers who have been denied promotions even after 20 years of service.

They also appealed to the government to give Ph.D benefits to those teachers who have already got the Ph.D degrees, irrespective of the year when they obtained the degree.

Degree examination: MU degree students, particularly of Part-I, are unhappy with the university authorities for the inordinate delay in holding the examinations for the session 2004-07 which was scheduled to be held last year itself.

As a result, their career hangs in balance. The degree students expressed anguish that despite repeated reminders, followed by a series of agitation on the university campus, the MU authorities have not initiated any step to publish the academic calendar of the university to streamline the degree-level examinations.

Students' union: MU students belonging to different organisations have urged the university authorities to conduct the students' union elections at the university and college-level soon. It is necessary to create an ideal atmosphere for teaching in colleges as well, said a student.

Closure of colleges: All MU colleges will remain closed from March 13 to 21 on account of Holi festival which falls on March 15.
