Nitish formula to light up state
PATNA: Darkness, load sheddings and power tripping will be a thing of past if the ambitious plans of the state government see the light of the day.
The state government has sent a proposal to the Centre to open new atomic, gas-based, thermal and hydel power projects to pull the state out of its trademark darkness. Among the plenty of the proposals is an atomic power plant which was pushed through by CM Nitish Kumar when he called on PM Manmohan Singh last month. "There is no atomic power plant in the entire eastern region," said energy minister Bijender Prasad Yadav here on Saturday. Speaking to TOI, the minister revealed that a detailed project report has been forwarded to the Centre in this regard. He said three places -- Gaya, Jamui and Rajgir -- have initially been selected for this plant. By Rajesh Kumar, Section Electricity Posted on Sat Mar 11, 2006 at 11:01:27 PM EST
"If the enriched uranium can be exported from our neighbourhood (Singhbhum) to other places, then why can't Bihar benefit from it?" he wondered. Bihar has all the necessary infrastructure and inputs required for an atomic power plant, he reasoned.
Only a few days back, a delegation of RJD MPs led by railway minister Lalu Prasad met the PM and demanded establishment of a nuclear power plant in Bihar to solve the power problem in the state, once and for all. Nitish, who is currently in Delhi, said, "Much before Lalu met the PM, my government had put forth this demand before the Centre". Nitish also called on Union power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde to demand opening of three new power plants, including a thermal one at Nabinagar and another at Pirpainti. A hydel power plant has also been demanded in Kaimur. The energy minister revealed that four proposals from Reliance, NHPC, Tata and a Hyderabad-based private company have already been received for the proposed Nabinagar Thermal Power Plant. Moreover, a thermal power plant at Kursela in Katihar district and a gas power plant in Bihta in Patna district have also been proposed, Yadav said. "Reliance has extended its gas pipe line up to Lucknow and it can further be extended to Bihar," he said, reminding that Reliance has evinced interest in the Nabinagar plant. Talks are already going on with Iran, Myanmar and Kazakhstan for the gas pipe lines. Once the deal is settled, all of them will pass through Bihar, he added. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-1446590,curpg-3.cms
