No impact of ML bandh call

PATNA: The CPI-ML-sponsored six-district bandh for restoration of the Amir Das Commission constituted for the purpose of inquiring into the political links of a self-styled banned private army, Ranvir Sena, failed to make any impact.

According to reports reaching from the districts such as Bhojpur, Jehanabad, Arwal, Gaya, Paliganj (Patna) and Goh (Aurangabad), the vehicles plied as usual while the shopkeepers did their normal business. "There was absolutely no impact of the bandh," commented a senior police officer.

However, state office secretary of the ML Santosh Sahar claimed that the two-hour "sarak jam-chakka jam" programme of the party in all the districts turned out to be a big success.

Party workers and leaders also took out processions at different places and forced closure of shops, markets and schools at different places, he stated.

Normal life was hardly affected in Jehanabad and Arwal districts during the 12-hour bandh which passed off peacefully amid tight security on Monday.

Most of the shops, business establishments, educational institutions, banks and government offices functioned normally and vehicles on the main roads plied as usual. However, buses did not ply on the rural routes.

Though slogan-shouting ML supporters came out on the roads its large numbers to enforce the bandh and put up road blockade in Jehanabad town, the strong posse of armed police accompanying them foiled their bid.

The lukewarm response to the bandh call in Arwal was surprising because it was in Arwal where Ranvir Sena had executed two gruesome massacres at Laxmanpur-Bathe and Shankarbigha in quick succession in the late 90s.

No impact of the bandh call given by the CPI(ML) was felt in any part of the Gaya district on Monday. The ML bandh was partially successful in Nawada and Bhojpur districts.
