Considered a lawless state where anti-socials get away easily and the conviction rate is abysmal, winds of change seem to be sweeping Bihar, changing the law and order system in the state. An increased conviction rate since January this year has brought some major relief to senior police officials.
Statistics for the month of May show that as many as 82 people were sentenced to life imprisonment within a month of committing heinous crimes in the state.
In April, 120 persons were convicted in cases under the Arms Act, as compared to 110 criminals convicted in the month of March, under different cases.
Abhayanand, Additional Director General (ADG), Headquarters, mentioned that while 267 persons had been convicted in cases under different sections of the IPC, 162 persons had been sentenced in cases under the Arms Act in May alone. While 34 persons were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for over 10 years, 317 persons had been awarded less than 10 years imprisonment by different courts in the state.
