Nitish, Lalu and some sweet mango diplomacy

Patna - They may be bitter political foes but nothing like mangoes to sweeten personal relations between Bihar Chief Minster Nitish Kumar and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad!

Nitish Kumar has said he will present ripe mangoes from the orchards of the chief minister's official residence at 1 Anne Marg to Lalu Prasad, who was the house's former occupant.

`I will gift mangoes to Laluji when the mango ripens in the orchard,' Nitish Kumar said this week.

For Lalu Prasad's family, this gesture will be a special one. After all the mangoes are from the orchards planted by it during its 15-year-long stay at the house.

The family had shifted there in 1990 and planted many trees, including seasonal fruits. It was there that his nine children grew up playing under the shadows of mango trees.

`Thanks to Nitish Kumar, Lalu's family will again get to taste the special mangoes,' a member of the staff at chief minister's official residence said.

The six-month-old Nitish Kumar government plans to gift baskets of mangoes to high-profile VIPs in New Delhi, including central ministers. But the mangoes for Lalu Prasad will be especially from the orchards of 1 Anne Marg, official sources said.

Lalu Prasad said his personal relations with Nitish Kumar were good and he had even sent him kaddu from his own fields. `I presented it to him as he is a pure vegetarian,' the former chief minister said.

During their stay at 1 Anne Marg, Lalu Prasad and his wife and former chief minister Rabri Devi took extra care to develop the beautiful mango orchards. They vacated the house in early February and moved to their new residence at 10 Circular Road.

Incidentally, last month the Nitish Kumar government presented Bihar's juicy shahi litchis to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as well as the vice-president and prime minister. Nearly hundred packets were distributed to VIPs in New Delhi.

Official sources said this was done as a goodwill gesture from the state government.
