Patna: June 30, 2006 : A high-level team of experts from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) is poised to visit Bihar in the early part of July to explore the possibility of setting up a nuclear power plant in the state to combat pathetic power situation that has plagued Bihar for decades.
Talking to the media on Thursday, M. M. Singh, Chairman of the Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB), said earlier he received a call from the NPCIL director who informed him of their proposed trip to Bihar in early July to conduct a study on the possibility of setting up the nuclear power plant in the state as earlier proposed by President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam last February.
Singh said the BSEB has created a five-member team to accompany and assist the NPCIL team of experts who will visit the probable sites for the nuclear power plant including Rajauli in Nawada district that remains the first choice of the Bihar government among other locations including Gaya and Aurangabad.
A strong case in favor of a nuclear power plant in Bihar was earlier made by the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, state Energy Minister Vijendra Prasad Yadav, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav.
"Rajauli has all the resources that is required to set up a nuclear power point capable of producing 100 to 220 megawatt," Singh said.
