RJD dharnas against govt 'failures'

PATNA: For the first time after being thrown out of power last year, RJD leaders took to the streets by staging dharnas across the state on Monday to protest the alleged failures of Nitish Kumar-led NDA government on different fronts.

In the state capital, RJD leaders sat near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi inside the Gandhi Maidan. In the absence of RJD chief Lalu Prasad and former CM Rabri Devi, it proved to be a low-key affair due to not-so-impressive presence of workers.

"Ours is a party which came to power straight from the streets and we will again come to power from the streets," said state RJD president Abdul Bari Siddiqui.

Patna MP Ram Kripal Yadav said this is the beginning of a phase-wise agitation to be launched by his party against the Nitish government.

"We only want to remind the people what Nitish promised during elections and what he has actually done during the last six months," Yadav said, adding criminals are feeling so emboldened during the Nitish regime that they killed a former DIG on a running train in broad daylight on Monday.

Yadav alleged around 4,000 persons were killed during the NDA regime. He also pointed towards the power crisis facing the state and the government's decision to wind up Amir Das Commission which had been formed to probe the outlawed Ranvir Sena's links with politicians.

The MP said his party is also opposing grant of prime land at throwaway prices to land mafias in the name of developing 'Greater Patna'. "The deprived classes are going to lose their land," he said.

The party released a pamphlet titled, 'Ka Kahin The Nitish Kumar Mukhya Mantri Banane Se Pahle (what Nitish has said before becoming CM)'.

The pamphlet recalls Nitish had promised to improve law and order in the state within three months of coming to power. "Fact is, criminals have virtually taken over the state," it alleges, charging the Bihar chief minister with being surrounded by sycophants.

The NDA government has been dubbed "anti-social justice" in the pamphlet which alleges that the current regime has been spreading lies about the previous Lalu-Rabri regime.
