The Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss has said that the construction of six AIIMS like medical institutions would be completed by 2009. Replying to a Starred Question in Lok Sabha today he said that the detailed project reports for these medical institutions would be ready by October-November this year and the construction would begin middle of next year.
The AIIMS like medical institutions are to be set up in Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan and Uttaranchal at a cost of Rs. 332 crores each.
The Minister informed the House that a sum of Rs.17.07 crore have been spent so far on various start up activities like construction of boundary wall etc. relating to setting up of AIIMS like institutions. He said for the current year there is a provision of Rs.75 crore for the preliminary activities under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna, PMSSY, under which scheme these AIIMS like institutions would be built.
Dr. Ramadoss told the Members that the States, to set up these institutions, have been chosen as they are under-served in terms of medical infrastructure, high incidence of mortality, inadequate facilities for super specialty services etc.
He said that the Government has also decided to upgrade 13 existing Government medical college institutions with an outlay of Rs.120 crore per institution, of which Rs.100 crore would be borne by the Centre and the remaining Rs.20/- crore by the respective State Government/Institution.
