Expressing serious concern at waterlogging in many low-lying areas of this state capital, the Patna High Court today directed the Bihar government to act on an expert panel's recommendations to tackle the problem during the rainy season.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice J N Bhatt and Justice Shivakirti Singh directed the government to execute measures suggested by a team constituted by the high court to deal with waterlogging in low-lying areas of Patna, including Kankarbagh, Rajendra Nagar and Lohanipur.
The bench directed the government to inform it about action taken on the team's recommendations on August 21.
A brief spell of rains in Patna last month had created a flood-like situation in many areas, much to the discomfort of citizens.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had toured the waterlogged areas and pointed out that choked drains and the rampant use of polythene bags that block drains were the main reasons behind the accumulation of water.
The High Court appointed committee, comprising advocates Prashant Pratap, Mihir Kumar Jha and Arvind Ujjwal and Disaster Management expert Satyendra Kumar Singh, has recommended the immediate repair of drain pipes, a ban on the use of polythene bags and the setting up of a control room where citizens can register their complaints against the waterlogging.
