The shaky ground beneath Bihar
Faultlines are developing in Motihari, Madhubani, Saharsa and areas along the Himalayan range. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed the disaster management department to act fast to minimise losses
ON THE DANGER LINE *Faultlines are developing in Motihari, Madhubani, Saharsa and areas along the Himalayan range. Saturated energy under the earth crust may explode any time here *The faultlines are radiating towards Patna in a straight line from Motihari and will go on to Fatuha and to Munger and Samastipur in the highly unstable Gangetic belt *The rocky three-tier strata under Bihar might slide north. Regions closer to the Himalayan plains are at greater risk *Smaller `energy lines' run south to north throughout the unstable alluvial plains of north Bihar *An estimated 6.13 lakh houses will be razed, 11.33 lakh dwellings will be partly destroyed and nearly 20 lakh houses will develop cracks if the state is hit by a quake above 6 on the Richter scale WARNING: BIHAR is on unsteady ground. Even a moderate earthquake could wipe out its urban centres, turning most of it into rubble. Satellite images of Bihar suggest that faultlines are developing in Motihari, Madhubani, Saharsa and areas along the Himalayan range and that saturated energy under its earth crust may explode any time. A faultline extends from Motihari to Patna in a straight line. It goes on to Fatuha, Munger and Samastipur in the "highly unstable Gangetic belt". The satellite data, recently submitted to the Bihar government, suggest that the rocky three-tier strata under its Gangetic belt, might slide north. Regions closer to the Himalayan plains are shown to be developing a "big energy line" near Motihari. Smaller 'energy lines' run south to north throughout the unstable alluvial plains of north Bihar. Sources said the Motihari line was "almost saturated and energy could be dissipated any time". READ MORE?, Click on full story....... Here's the chilling prediction: If a quake measuring 6 on the Richter scale rocks Bihar, an estimated 6.13 lakh houses will be razed, 11.33 lakh dwellings will be partly destroyed and nearly 20 lakh houses will develop cracks. Sources said Patna was even more vulnerable than Bhuj, which was flattened following the Gujarat quake in 2001. Both Patna and Bhuj fall in seismic zone 4 and are located not more than 100 km away from zone 5 - the most vulnerable zone. Bihar qualifies to be more quake-prone on six vulnerability parameters against Bhuj's four.
Both Bhuj and Patna face seismic hazard of equal magnitude and have similar kind of river basin, increasing their vulnerability. Though both equidistant from potential faultlines, Patna is more susceptible because it is surrounded by major faults, which may widen and result in havoc. Officials here told HT that Patna would be more at risk because it was surrounded by big reservoirs and water bodies. Large-scale mining activities in the immediate vicinity also added to its vulnerability, they said. During the last 250 years, Patna has been hit by many minor and major earthquakes measuring between 3 and 8 on the Richter scale. In 1934, when a quake of the magnitude of 8 on the Richter hit the state, Patna's population was less than a lakh. It has now crossed 14 lakh, according to a paper presented to the Nitish government by the disaster management cell which draws inputs from IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur. Even these are guesstimates "because we are not prepared and we cannot estimate the loss of life," a top official said. "We can actually say that the management projects will take some time to be in place." Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed the state disaster management department to act fast and make sure that losses are minimised. From: Hindustan Times, 22-08-06
