Tears or stones? AIIMS doctors examine girl

DOCTORS at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) today examined Savitri Kumari, a 13-year-old who rolls stones down her cheeks instead of tears. Having undergone a surgery in Ranchi earlier, this is the last ray of hope for Savitri and her family, who have come down all the way from Jharkhand.

Though the doctors did not find anything significant after examining her, they will conduct tests, including a psychological assessment before arriving at any conclusion.

Even as this is the first ever case of its kind, we will have to be very careful before coming to any conclusion. I examined her eyes but I am not sure about the stones coming out of eyes. The psychological assessment is also really very important as there is a possibility that it could be a phsychological thing. Few years back we had a case in which ants would come from the eyes of a 16year-old when she would cry. However, we caught her putting ants in her eyes. Henceforth, we will have to carry many tests before commenting on this case, said Dr JS Titiyal, professor in RP centre, AIIMS.

Savitri came with her father, Ganesh Ram and will be admitted in the hospital tomorrow for the next two-three days for close investigations. The father also disclosed that stones would sometimes roll down even from her daughter's ears, nose and mouth too. The problem for this girl started two years back and the family handed over the stones of different colours to the doctors which will be sent to a laboratory in AIIMS for further investigations.

Doctors say that medical literature show few reports with the same problem in some people but it was later found to be a fungal infection. However, doctors doctors want to be very sure before putting this case in the same category.

We examined her ears too, there was lot of wax but I didnot find any stones in them. There is a need for blood investigation to rule out the possibility of high calcium content, ENT check up is also required. They also brought stones of different colours collected by them from her eyes. They were like sugar crystals and we will be sending them to our laboratory for investigations tomorrow, added Dr Titiyal.
