Here We Go Again! Chaos in Bihar Assembly

The Bihar Legislative Assembly, on the opening day of its monsoon session on Friday, lived up to its reputation - slogan-shouting, dharnas, bad-mouthing, disruption of speeches. Leading the pack was none other than the former Chief Minister of Bihar Rabri Devi who was blocking the main entrance of the building well before the Assembly convened.

Waving anti-NDA placards, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders accused the Nitish government of converting Bihar into a 'police state' where innocent RJD leaders and activists were being targeted.

The noise got even more louder when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar arrived at the Assembly. "We are here to create ruckus and that's all we intend to do for next four days," Rabri Devi told the reporters as a matter of fact.

Once inside the Assembly, things got even more chaotic as RJD and Communist Party of India (ML) leaders fought to get their voices heard before anyone else. Accusing the government of 'unleashing a crime wave' in the capital while showing extreme favoritism towards certain individuals including the film-maker Prakash Jha, the opposition leaders continued to disrupt the session demanding resignation from the Nitish government and a CBI enquiry into the land purchase deal by Jha.

During this melee, the names of legislative members were announced.

Interestingly, a meeting called by the leader of the Opposition Rabri Devi in her room to discuss strategies to corner the ruling parties was attended by only one leader of CPI-M, Ramdeo Verma.

Reacting to a notice earlier issued by Jha demanding unconditional apology from those who accused him of 'getting sweet deal' from the Nitish government, the Opposition leaders, at the expiry of the 15-day deadline, said they were not interested in sending a response to the film-maker.

"We have concrete proof of irregularities in the land deal between the NDA government and Prakash Jha and the question of apology does not arise. This is between the Opposition and the ruling NDA parties, where did Jha come into it?" Samata party state president P. K. Sinha said.

"We are not going to be cowed down by such hollow threats because we have evidence of gross misappropriation in the land deal," Sinha said.
