Patna's old lot troubled by jobless kids
PATNA: Dozens of lonely old couples are living under constant threat nowadays. They are either afraid of poor law and order situation or are on the verge of losing all their savings due to day-by-day increasing demand for money by their jobless children. The situation has become so pathetic that some of them have sought separate accommodation from the Pensioners' Samaj.
Take the example of octogenarian historian R S Sharma, who has recently been made the chairman of the search committee of the VCs for universities of Bihar, and his wife Malina Sharma, a retired Patna Training College principal. The old couple, whose only son is settled in New Delhi, had a taste of poor law and order situation in the state on Tuesday.
According to the historian, some local goons on the wee hours on Tuesday committed burglary at their Boring Canal Road house. The thieves, however, did not succeed in stealing any valuables except for five pairs of khadi "kurta" and "dhoti", a branded wrist watch and mobile charger from the ground floor of the house. Sharma, however, did not take extra pain to lodge an FIR with the police station concerned. "The burglary was not the major one. But it was one of traumatic experiences of my life," he said, adding, " Chor honest thaa. Mera pension papers and bank passbook nahi le gaya. Baaki to mere paas sirf kitab hi hai, jo uske kaam ka nahin thaa ," he said.
He further said, "At this stage of my life, I can not leave my own house and settle elsewhere." Like Sharmas, there are a number of persons in the city living lonely in posh colonies. Their children are mostly settled either in abroad or in metros. The only lifeline of these old couples is their drivers, servants and gardeners. "We are totally dependent on our drivers and servants during the period of crisis. We are constantly living under threats as theft of cars and valuables in VIP colonies have now become a common feature," said a retired official. In contrast, some of the old couples are fed up with the increasing demand for more money by their jobless children. Bihar Pensioners' Samaj, having a membership of nearly 2.66 lakh members in Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand, has received a large number of such cases. Only last year, a retired ADM-rank official had sought a separate accommodation on the Pensioners' Samaj premises to get rid of his son. Similarly, another retired official of excise department has asked the bank not to release his pension to his son. The Pensioners' Samaj is flooded with problems of these retired people. "At least 90 per cent such couples are either living under threat due to poor law and order situation or are upset with their jobless children," said Samaj secretary Ravi Shankar Sinha, adding the Samaj is looking into their matters.
