JD (U) man adds to woes of 7/11 victim's kin

PATNA: Two months after 7/11 Mumbai blasts, the family of at least one victim finds itself virtually homeless.

Krishna Kumar, an official of the Indian Overseas Bank, died in the blast and the bank has asked his wife, Anju Kumari, to vacate the flat allotted to her husband in Malad (east) in Mumbai.

To add to her woes, the tenant of her Patna flat has refused to vacate it for her.

"My daughter wants to stay in Patna with her seven-year-old son... She is expecting another child. But all efforts to get the flat vacated has failed," said Srinath Prasad, Kumar's father-in-law.

In his late fifties, Prasad, a Reserve Bank of India official, said Anju has applied for a job in the Overseas Bank on compassionate ground.

Even if she gets the job, she would like to settle in Patna, he added. That the tenant is an activist of the ruling JD(U) has compounded the problems of the family.

"The flat located at Exhibition Road was purchased by my son-on-law with bank loan about two years ago. Since he lived in Mumbai, he let out the flat on rent,"Prasad said, adding the tenant did not only default on rent but also did not pay the energy bills.

"We served him a notice to vacate the flat and he refused to vacate the house, and now he is issuing threats to me that he would get a case lodged against me," Prasad said...

For now, relatives have put up the 30-year-old widow at their house in Mumbai. Back home in Patna, her father has been running from pillar to post to get the flat vacated.

He has petitioned the City SP, Patna, and met the DM twice. The DM even telephoned the local police station, but to no avail.

The family has now pinned its hope on CM Nitish Kumar. Prasad has petitioned the CM.

The petition reads: "Sir, I am 59 and I have had a open heart surgery recently. I am living under mental tension because I recently lost my son-in-law. If the tenant does not vacate the flat, where will my daughter and her children live?"
