IN A new twist to the political saga in Jharkhand, Speaker Inder Singh Namdhari on Thursday threatened three legislators, including two National Democratic Alliance rebels, with disqualification for crossing over to the United Progressive Alliance.
Namdhari issued notices to Enos Ekka, Kamlesh Singh and Stephen Marandi asking them to explain on September 11, three days ahead of the floor test in the Assembly, why their House memberships should not be cancelled.
Four ministers of the Arjun Munda Cabinet had resigned on Tuesday, precipitating a crisis for the government and leading to Speaker Sibtey Razi allowing a trial of strength on September 14 for the UPA.
Following this, some BJP legislators on Thursday petitioned the Speaker to disqualify the rebels citing breach of constitutional norms.
While Enos Ekka and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator Kamlesh Singh were accused of violating their respective party whips, Marandi was charged with joining a 'political' party (Jharkhand Vikas Morcha) after winning the election as an Independent.
The UPA has called the Speaker's move vindictive. Its leaders said they would file separate petitions in the Supreme Court against the Speaker's decision.
Further, UPA leaders have deferred the nomination of the Alliance leader till they win the floor test in the House. Congress in-charge Noor Bano said former minister Madhu Koda, one of the four rebel ministers who joined the UPA, would be projected as the UPA leader in the Assembly.
Chief Minister Munda, meanwhile, seemed pleased with the shape the efforts to rescue his ministry were taking. Munda reviewed the performance of all government departments and told officials that he would "tide over the current problem." Munda joined hundreds of BJP members at the busy Albert Ekka Chowk to chant Vande Mataram. He told the officials not to wait for September 14 but put up all urgent work needing disposal to him right away.
