According to new CBSE Guidelines, no Student in Classes VI to VIII Will Be Failed
This comes as close to a masti ki pathshala as we can possibly get. With a view to bringing down stress levels in classes VI to VIII, the Central Board of Secondary Education has decided that there will be no terminal examinations in middle school and all students will be promoted to the next class.
``The idea is to remove the fear of exams from the minds of children and generate in them an eagerness to understand topics, rather than scaring them with prolonged examinations, which are mostly tests of how much they have learned by rote,'' CBSE chairman Ashok Ganguly said. ![]() MASTI KI PATHSHALA The practice of promoting all students without terminal examinations has been successfully in vogue in primary classes of CBSE-affiliated schools. However, this does not exempt middle school kids from assessment. Class tests and small unit tests will be tools to assess and evaluate them and put them through a process of continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE). But such evaluation will not be prolonged affairs. The syllabus of each subject will be divided into small portions so that kids are first thoroughly prepared on each topic and then assessed on their level of understanding. The Board has framed a circular to this effect and is in the process of sending it to its schools across the country. Many schools are already preparing for the new system.
Report cards not to mention `pass' or `fail' Click on "Full Story" for more... By Dr arvind, Section Educations In Bihar Posted on Sat Jan 20, 2007 at 03:05:10 AM EST
In the middle school, a sevenpoint grading system (A* to E) will be introduced from the 2007 academic session in order to facilitate the no-terminal exam and no-detention policy. Kids scoring 90% or more through CCE will get an A*, while those scoring between 80 and 89 will get an A. Similarly, those getting between 70 and 79 will have a B*, while those between 60 and 69 will get a B. Children scoring between 45 to 59 will get a C while grade D will be for a score between 33 to 44. Those scoring below 33% will get an E.
However, the report card will not mention either pass or fail because Board officials feel this creates a feeling of discrimination. And, no kid will be detained in class even if he/she scores an E. Many schools are aware of these changes and say that they are happy. They feel this will help remove the fear of studies and exams from kids' minds. ``We are yet to get the circular but we will soon hold meetings so that the changes can be implemented in middle school. In primary school, we have successfully removed exams and detention and I hope it won't be a problem in middle school either,'' said Rita Chatterjee, principal of Kolkata's Apeejay school. Anjali Razdan, principal of the city's Lakshmipat Singhani Academy too felt that the new system was adaptable. ``However, I would like to implement it in stages, starting with class VI this year. I would also suggest to the Board that for the time being, we could have both grades and marks in the report card,'' Razdan said. CBSE will become the first Board in the country to do away with terminal exams and detention in middle school. From: TOI, JAN-20,07
