Bihar to get an IIT 60-year wait over
More than 100% jump in allocation for higher education Rs 5,500 crore from last year's Rs 2,600 crore expected in the coming budget will bring a big cheer to people of Bihar since one of the three new IITs planned in the 11th Plan will come up in the state. Bihar has waited for nearly six decades for an IIT.
Though the site of the Bihar edition of the prestigious institution is yet to be finalised, minister of state for HRD M A A Fatmi wants it to come up in Darbhanga, his constituency. But officials are not convinced since Darbhanga lacks the related infrastructure needed to start an IIT. In all likelihood, the IIT in Bihar would be located around Patna. Apart from the long-standing demand for an IIT by Bihar politicians, what clinched the issue is the fact that the state has no national institute left after the formation of Jharkhand. Bihar is also among the few states from where a large number of students join IITs every year. People in the know of politics over IIT in Bihar say that in the 1950s Bihar Institute of Technology, Sindri, was to get converted into an IIT but then it was set up in Kharagpur due to then West Bengal chief minister B C Roy's friendship with Jawaharlal Nehru. The second new IIT will come up in the Telengana region of Andhra Pradesh most likely in Medak.
Earlier, it was decided to have it in Adilabad. And the third will be in Rajasthan, the exact site having not yet been finalised. There is also a plan to have two new Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, one likely in Madhya Pradesh and other in South India, and two new Schools of Planning and Architecture. Though the bulk of increase in the budget outlay would be to accomplish 56% increase in seats and related infrastructure over the next three years to accommodate 27% reservation for Other Backward Castes, it would also go towards setting up of three new IITs, two new IISERs and two new SPAs. Though it is still less than Rs 8,000 crore demanded by ministry for higher and technical education, sources said, ``The more than 100% jump in allocation is a step in the right direction and would help in starting a number of projects lined up for the 11th Plan.''
