Lalu Lays Stone For Broad Gauge Line Between Bariarpur And Mannanpur

Railway minister Lalu Prasad on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of a new broad gauge (BG) railway line between Bariarpur and Mannanpur via Haveli Kharagpur-Laxmipur and Barhat. He also inaugurated extension work of General Iron Foundry (GIF) and Steel Foundry at Jamalpur railway workshop and extension of a bogie shop at Jamalpur workshop. He said these projects will certainly put economy of the state on the right track.

The new BG line project will cover 68 km between Bhagalpur and Jamalpur railway stations and connect Mannanpur railway station on the Kiul-Jhajha section of the Eastern Railway at an estimated cost of Rs 250 crore.

The extension of GIF and Steel Foundry, besides extension of a bogie shop at Jamalpur workshop, will cost Rs 300 crore.

The railway minister said that container wagons will be manufactured in the Jamalpur workshop soon after the proposed third railway line, connecting Ludhiana and Howrah, starts functioning. He said the mega road-cum-rail bridge across the Ganga in Munger and that of Patna will be dedicated to the nation positively by 2009. "The Munger and Patna bridges have been included in the national project which will be completed before the schedule," Lalu said.

The railway minister, while talking about the next railway budget, said there is a proposal to open cold storages in 7,500 railway stations to facilitate the farmers of the green vegetable. "This will prove useful to all classes of people, particularly the middle and the poor, who have to pay hefty prices even for ordinary vegetables," Lalu said, adding that even the residents of Delhi will get potato at the rate of Re 1 per kg instead of Rs 10-20 per kg at present.

Junior Union minister for water resources Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav, former state ministers Upendra Prasad Verma and Shakuni Choudhry were also present on the occasion.
