The chief economic advisor to the government of India, Arvind Virmani, on Wednesday said that the state government should adopt more focused approach to facilitate expeditious and effective attainment of the development goal. He said there was a need for the government to define its priorities and advised it not to take up too many things at the same time. This is important for judicious application of scarce resources. Ironically he gave more emphasis on the road construction and sanitation.
Virmani was in Patna to attend a day-long workshop on `Bihar Economic Survey: Apprisal and Improvement.' He also emphasized the need for the state government to get into the nitty-gritty concerning the welfare of the masses.
He cautioned the planners to be careful on what the government needed to do for achieving developmental goals. For this, one has to know what are the drivers of growth. While traditional solutions like growth of agriculture, infrastructure, and manufacturing sector comes to mind actually, according to him, none of them worked. On the other hand it is the old economy growth drivers that are able to deliver results in a far superior and sustainable way, he said.
