New Delhi Heroes Posts Win Over Bihar Regimental Centre
The frontline combination of Amjad and Havinder Sr. struck two goals to help New Delhi Heroes to a 3-1 win over Bihar Regimental Centre in the opening match of the qualifying round in the 120th Osian's Durand Cup football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Thursday.
Havinder worked relentlessly to find gaps and struck the second and third goals after the Nigerian midfielder, Harrison, had put New Delhi Heroes 1-0 up in the seventh minute. The city team, which is now owned by Osian's, controlled the match for most part, but towards the end it let Bihar Regiment crack open the defence. The 86th minute goal by M.A. Tudu was a result of a total defensive lapse during the free-kick taken by P. Debnath. By pardeep3dec, Section Fun & Games Posted on Sat Oct 20, 2007 at 12:10:35 AM EST
"I am not happy with the way we played today. The opponents outplayed us towards the end," was the caustic observation by New Delhi Heroes' coach, Cheema Okorie.
New Delhi Heroes started with a flourish as the midfielders kept the strikers on the move. Harrison raced up when he saw the gap, beat two defenders before he scored with a right-footer grounder. In the 19th minute, Amjad sent a long cross from the right flank for Havinder, who nicely chipped in to make it 2-0 for the half time lead. On changing the ends, New Delhi Heroes seemed tired. Havinder messed up two good chances before the armymen decided to attack. Mahto almost scored in the 56th minute but his powerful shot hit the crosspiece and rebounded back. Two minutes later, New Delhi Heroes counter-attacked through Amjad. At about 40 yards he released the ball for Havinder, who took is all the way beating one defender before shooting it into the net. The 3-0 lead was enough to guarantee the Delhi team a second round meeting with Indian National FC on October 24. Towards the end, slight laxity allowed Bihar Regiment to score a consolation goal through striker Tudu. Ashish shines Ashish Yadav's unbeaten 64 helped Ravindra Public School beat St. Mark's School (Meera Bagh) by eight wickets in the league match of the Boost Cup under-17 inter-school cricket tournament at the Bharat Nagar ground here on Thursday. The scores: St. Mark's School, Meera Bagh 108 in 32.3 overs (Ankur Powar 32, Avesh Sharma 30, Saurav Kumar four for 19, Manoj Chauhan three for 21, Shani Yadav three for 24) lost to Ravindra Public School 109 for two in 24.2 overs (Ashish Yadav 64 not out). Ryan International School 172 in 39.3 overs (Kashish Kumar 43, Saurabh Singh 30, Lakshay Suri three for 42, Sachin Saraswat three for 28, Mohammed Sufyan three for 30) lost to AG DAV School 173 for seven in 36.4 overs (Yatharth Tomar 76, Shashan Negi 34, Kinsukh Singh three for 46, Piyush Kumar three for 37).
